Bridget of Sweden wrote of visions she had during a pilgrimage to Palestine which provided artists ideas of how to depict an image of Mary. She wrote "I beheld a Virgin of extreme beauty, well wrapped in a delicate tunic; golden hair falling loosely down her shoulders." Tom Clark yielded to this tradition and added the brooch of a dogwood blossom. The blossom, with its four white petals and rust-colored niches within, recalls the cross of Jesus. Cast in bronze.
