Smoked Gouda Grits

David Venable

This recipe could turn a suspicious Yankee into a grit-loving Southerner! I love grits and this recipe is absolutely divine with the Gouda cheese and flavorful sage.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 5 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1-1/2 cups uncooked quick-cooking grits (preferably yellow)
  • 2 cups smoked Gouda, shredded
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Combine butter, chicken broth, milk, oregano, and salt in a 3-qt sauce pot. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Slowly whisk in the grits.
Cover, reduce the heat, and simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add cheese, sour cream, sage, and parsley. Whisk to combine and cook until the cheese is melted and the grits have a creamy texture. Serve immediately.

Cook's Notes

For an added creaminess, you can sub out the milk with heavy cream.|For a little zip in your grits, add a pinch or two of ground cayenne pepper.
