About Comforters

Care and Use

Northern Nights comforters are easy to care for and are designed to last night after night, year after year. Here are some tips on maintaining your comforter:

  • Use a Duvet Cover
If used with a duvet cover, your comforter should only need to be cleaned every three to five years. Also, you won't need a top sheet, blanket, or bedspread.

  • Professionally Launder Your Comforter Every Three to Five Years
Down actually washes well, but the size of comforters makes it more sensible to leave the cleaning to a professional. Call the cleaner before taking in the comforter. Ensure that they have experience with down products. If you decide to wash the comforter yourself, make sure you have a machine large enough to accommodate it, and that you wash it on gentle cycle in cold water, then air dry.

  • Fluff Your Comforter When You Make Your Bed
Give your comforter a shake or lay it on a flat surface. Then simply push the down in place with the heel of your hand and forearm. You can also fluff it in a dryer on low or medium heat. Try adding a couple of tennis balls to help fluff.

  • Store Your Featherbed in a Breathable Bag
Avoid storing comforters in plastic bags that may trap moisture and cause the fill to mildew or disintegrate.

Comforter FAQs

What is fill power?
Fill power refers to the quality of the down in our down comforters. The higher the fill power, the better the quality, as it'll loft and insulate better, stay fluffier, and last longer. Higher fill powers can trap more air and, thus, look fluffier. Down acts like a natural insulator, maintaining your body's normal temperature. It's also nature's lightest-weight insulator.

Why are there different constructions?
The best constructions allow the down to loft, providing maximum insulation, breathability, and durability. Baffles, small walls of fabric between the top and bottom tick material, allow maximum loft and eliminate cold spots. Open design comforters, like Box Step or Karo Baffle, require more adjusting of the fill and more regular maintenance. Closed designs, such as the Box Stitch or Baffle Box, are lower maintenance and require less shaking. Keep in mind — closed designs don't stay fluffy as long as open constructions because down can't travel the length of the comforter.

What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads contained in one-square inch of fabric. Higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns. They're softer and more luxurious and breathable. The lightest of high-thread-count bedding also maximizes the fill's ability to loft in your comforter.

Where does the down in my comforter come from?
Down used for comforter fills comes from geese and ducks. Northern Nights buys the finest raw materials available from poultry farms and feather brokers in 15 different countries. All down and feather is sterilized and then cleaned until it meets our Hyperclean® standard.

How do I tell the difference between comforters? What determines the different prices?
There are several factors that contribute to the quality of a down comforter and their different prices: construction, quality of down, fill power, fill weight, fabric, and warranty.

The duvet cover I purchased doesn't have the same dimensions as my comforter. What can I do?
Different manufacturers use different dimensions for Twin, Queen, and King sizes. Refer to the tag on your comforter for the exact dimensions. When buying a duvet cover, be sure to get one that's at least as long and wide as your comforter's dimensions. Don't try to stuff the comforter in a cover that's too small. It's not unusual for the duvet cover to be several inches longer on one end. This can be easily altered for a closer fitting cover. Simply turn the cover inside out. Sew a new seam at the end of the cover that's too long.

How can I spot clean the fabric?
First, move all the down from the section of fabric you wish to clean. Don't get any of the down wet. Use a mild soap or spot remover to gently rub or dab the soiled fabric. Be careful not to damage the fabric by scrubbing or rubbing harshly. Then, rinse with water. Dry the spot by hand with a hairdryer. Ensure that the fabric is completely dry by fluffing it in the dryer.

What's the difference between standard and oversized?
Oversized comforters measure longer in length and width to ensure generous coverage and luxurious comfort:
Standard Twin measures 63" x 86"; oversized Twin 68" x 88".
Standard Full/Queen measures 88" x 90"; oversized Full/Queen 90" x 98".
Standard King measures 104" x 90"; oversized King 108" x 98".

Virtually Allergen-free

All of our down and feather is Hyperclean® — a special washing process that uses biodegradable soaps, washing up to eight times, to remove all of the dirt, dust, and allergens from the down/feather. Northern Nights is the only company that uses Hyperclean down and feather. Very few people are actually allergic to down/feather, but many are allergic to dust and dirt. Hyperclean makes our goods virtually allergy-free.

Construction Terms

When it comes to getting the most out of your bedding, understanding construction is key. Reference the helpful guide below for important terminology.

baffling Baffling: This construction type uses sewn-in cloth "walls" to keep the fill in your bedding in place.

Sewn-through Boxes Sewn-through Boxes: Constructed by sewing horizontal and vertical stitches into a comforter's top and bottom layers, these boxes keep fill from clumping.

Channels Channels: Created by sewing the top and bottom layers of the comforter together, channels use horizontal or vertical columns to keep fill in place.

Gusseting Gusseting: This construction technique creates outer side walls to secure a comforter's top and bottom layers together. It helps a comforter appear loftier and fuller.

Diamond Stitch Diamond Stitch: This stitching pattern locks fill in place for a low-maintenance design that provides a polished look for the bed.

Love It!!! Love it! I cannot wait to get into bed. It is the perfect temperature. It is like sleeping in one of those luxurious beds in some real expensive hotel rooms. It is well worth the money!! 12-01-12
Poor quality and didn't receive the right one! Here's the thing - my mother has this comforter and it is great! I was so excited to order one myself. But when it arrived, it was NOT the same comforter my mother had. It didn't have the blue piping, and it was very scratchy with low fill. So if you get the right one, I have no doubt it will be amazing. But beware of the same situation I had in receiving the wrong one. For this price, there shouldn't be any question of quality. 10-27-12
SUPERIOR Quality & Best Value Price Anywhere! W*O*W is this a wonderful comforter! There are many out there on the market with inferior fill weight/down quality. Even Siberian Goose down comforters have less weight cost an average of $800 for King size comforter like my purchase. Gorgeous 370TC 100% cotton, excellent baffle design with strategically placed reinforcements to keep down in place. Right ot of the box, gently shaking a bit fluffs it right up and it's amazingly lightweight, yet heavy enough to feel like your cocooned in layers of blankets without the added weight or battling shifting layers of blankets all over the place. Using a duvet cover, the recommendation is to professionally launder only once every 3-5 years! Living in New England, I welcome the toasty warmth of this snuggly comforter in the coming months to help make invaluable sleep time more restful. I recommend this for anyone who wants a great night's sleep! 10-10-12
Worth the wait! I bought this comforter after waiting for many years & using one that was up to 15 years old, the feathers had all shifted to the corners & I would continuously have to shake it just to get the feathers distributed to the middle for a short period of time. It was time for a new comforter! This comforter is amazing, the feathers stay in place & are evenly distributed. It is very warm but not too warm; I live in New England & I use it year round, in the summer with just a sheet or with a sheet & blanket in the winter. I would highly recommend this to anyone; its worth the price, you will not be let down. 07-10-12
Finally picked a good one My daughter needed a down comforter. She sleeps under 4 blankets otherwise. I told her I'd get her one for her birthday and I did. It didn't work out. I believe it was the year round comforter. Just not enough warmth for her. So I went the extra mile and ordered the heavy weight comforter. When she got it she hoped that it would give her the warmth she needs because there is no one better in Northern Nights. And she loves it !!!!! For the first time in a long time she is warm. She is in love with it and can't wait to get to bed at night. 03-03-12
Great Fluffy Warm Yet Light Comforter I have tried other down blankets and comforters, but this one is THE BEST!!! This comforter is light, airy, billowy, yet is very soft, comfy and warm... not Too warm, just perfect :) My husband... who is picky picky even loves it! We have a very deep mattress king and this comforter fits, even hangs over to cover the mattress, which is ideal! I highly recommend spending the money on this. I know it's a lot, but I researched several other stores and web sites, this was by far the best quality for the least cost. I say try it, you'll like it! 02-01-12
Wonderful Comforter Just received this yesterday. Excellent quality, lots of fill and lofts well. I bought this to replace my 5 year old down comforter which had lost its fluff. Very warm and snuggly. Another Northern Nights great purchase. 12-13-11
Love it! This is probably my 6th comforter from Northern Nights and the 3rd one I bought for my bed in the last 10 years, the one that I just replaced had a severe feather shift in less than a year after I bought it and the feathers were all down by our feet and it was like sleeping with a double thick sheet at our shoulders so I bought this a week ago and so far I love it, it is so warm and nice to sleep under I don't want to get out of bed! 01-12-11
