Janome Derby Line Portable Sewing Machine is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small, but handy I love this machine. It handles most material, and is very light. I have 2 problems with it. The first is a biggy, no light. I mostly sew black clothes, so without a light, I can't see a thing. The other thing is the thread holder. To put the thread through the needle I have to tilt the machine, to see, and to reach, the needle eye. At this point the spool of thread takes off across the room. A taller plastic stick, or a way to lock the spool of thread on, would be great. I have no problems with the actual sewing. This machine is great. I have lamp that shines a spotlight on my sewing, so that problem is fixed. But I haven't solved the run away spool yet

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sewing for dummies I was sewing everywhere I could get this portable little delightful machine! I love the color and I love how light it is. I am not a professional, but it was super easy to use that I’m sewing like a connoisseur! Highly recommend!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Purchase Ever Machine is really small and the stitches wouldn’t hold no matter what the settings were on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The Yugo of Sewing Machines Stopped working after 2 weeks. Not worth buying. Definitely looks and feels like a toy from it's size. Bobbin case broke after trying to sew a pleated face mask. This seems to be a frequent complaint from those who also had this machine. Maybe for kids who want to sew doll dresses but not worth sewing anything more than that in my opinion. Beginners are probably better off learning the basics on an intermediate to advanced machine rather than starting with this model.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Machine Not Useable I received my machine yesterday, and I am returning it today. The stitches on the dial did not correspond with the pictures printed on the side of the machine. There were three stitch lengths: very small, tiny and itty-bitty. I ran my test stitches on a piece of felt, which was almost too thick for the machine to handle. There is no light or thread cutter. The pressure foot is so large it interferes with attempting to thread the needle. The spool pin and pressure foot lever are plastic instead of metal, and if either should break it would render the machine useless. This machine is not a toy, however, I would not use it to teach someone how to sew as it would be so difficult as to be frustrating. I am not a beginner -- I have been sewing all my life. I recently downsized to an apt from a house and was hoping this small machine would serve my needs. It does not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Love the Size To me, its almost perfect. If they could squeeze in a itty bitty light like book light size, and a thread Cutter which doesn't really require room it would be perfect. Janome please consider.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent and Servicable I purchased in teal a few months ago and have successfully completed several household projects. Considering its (low) cost and small footprint, it works very well. 10 different stiches, multiple zig zag and decorative stitches. As someone who is returning to sewing, this was a good starting place and I now feel confident enough to move up to something with more accessories. Worked my way through heavy blankets, table runners and tote bags and only with multiple seam layers on tote bag did I have to manually move needs. Cons: no light and no other 'feet'. Manual is OK. I will use this as back up when I upgrade.
