Incoming rays of light are refracted inside the gemstone and scattered, creating a unique play of light. This phenomenon is called adularescence and is best visible when the moonstone is moved back and forth in the light. These gemstones can range from semi-transparent to opaque, and deposits are found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
