Easy Home Theater and Home Automation... In a Cube
I walk into my living room... I say "Alexa turn on tv"... The tv turns on. I then say "Alexa switch to Fire Tv", then the tv input switches to the Fire Tv input on the Tv. I then say "Alexa play 'It's a Wonderful Life ' " and then my favorite holiday movie plays from Amazon.
It's that simple.
I am a dedicated home theater streamer gadgeteer, my office is what my lovely wife calls mission control but I have been boxing up some of my toys as there is a new toy in town called the Fire Tv Cube.
This device with a few setups can control your TV, Bluray, and some cable boxes. It comes with what is called an IR blaster built in to the Cube, even if on a different shelf it can control a tv or other device but also includes a wired IR blaster which is a little cube that houses the same LEDs to control tv and other components of they are locked away in a cabinet.
It also comes with a mini USB dongle with an Ethernet adapter so if you wish to go wired Ethernet for internet (a little more on that later) but you can also go wireless.
The Cube has the same controls on top as an Echo, so this combines a Fire tv with a Echo dot... You can ask what the weather is for your location or Timbuktu for that matter or any other sort of info ( "you know, what's that actor in that movie?"). Information will display on the screen and you will get Alexa's voice also telling you that Timbuktu is 90F and the actor is Jimmy Stewart.
If you have 4k TV and 4k source this device can marry well and display the 4k content. There is an HDMI connector on the back panel and there is also CEC control capability via the HDMI for newer equipment.
I have Alexa capable switches throughout the house to turn off and on various electrical devices (for example, that pesky cable box you have to keep rebooting).
Now I have added an Amazon Fire Recast DvR for recording and playback over the air tv shows and connect via my house network, but had problems with "the source losing connection". So during troubleshooting I went wireless and my connection problems went away so I suspect there may be problems with the provided USB Ethernet dongle.
Overall if you like the Amazon products and Alexa integration and home automation, this device can only add to your ease and pleasure of watching tv. This review is just a brief statement on its capabilities, more information is available over the internet in the web, but it's a great device!
