About Paula Deen

About Paula Deen

Who would ever think that a housewife from Albany, Georgia with no formal training in food would become one of the country’s most beloved celebrity cooks? Every day, hordes of fans from all over the country line up outside of Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady & Sons, in Savannah, GA hoping to get a peek of the Food Network’s most approachable chef. This lively Southern woman with piercing blue eyes is proof that dreams can come true. With her best selling cookbooks, entertainment magazine, hit show Paula’s Home Cooking, and the launch of her new show Paula’s Party,it’s easy to see that there is no stopping this woman’s success.

Living with agoraphobia for 20 years and experiencing a crumbling marriage, Deen was left with two growing sons and no source of income. With no education and very little to fall back on, the then-42-year-old housewife reached deep into her Southern roots and drew inspiration from what she knew best – her kitchen stove. Her culinary career began in June of 1989 out of her kitchen with The Bag Lady, a home-based lunch delivery service in Savannah. The woman with the big dreams would whip up tuna fish sandwiches wrapped in Saran Wrap and have her two sons sell them to local businesses. Within two years, The Bag Lady grew too much for a home-based operation, and she eventually opened her first restaurant on Savannah’s Southside called The Lady. In 1996, after five successful years, Deen was ready for yet another challenge and launched her second restaurant The Lady & Sons, which to this day serves thousands of Savannah visitors, including celebrity clientele.

In 1997, Deen published her first cookbook, The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook. As luck would have it, a major publishing house picked it up when one of their literary agents walked into the restaurant to escape a rainstorm. She picked up the cookbook and immediately realized its potential. Shortly after that, Deen’s cookbook career was off to an impressive start with promotional appearances on QVC, where it quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks. By then, Deen’s career seemed to have no limits. In the years that followed, she published numerous other cookbooks, including The Lady & Sons Too!, The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, Paula Deen & Friends Living It Up Southern Style, and Paula Deen Classics. On October 24, Simon & Schuster will release Deen’s sixth cookbook, Paula Deen Celebrates.

Paula’s Home Cooking premiered on the Food Network on November 16, 2002. The program features Deen doing what she does best – being herself, teaching people how to bring joy into their kitchens and homes. With Deen, it’s about teaching viewers to bring out the best in their families and creating happy memories no matter what the budget.

This fall, Deen is launching her second program on the Food Network and taking it to a new level by inviting guests to participate in her cooking classes. Paula’s Party premieres in late October and features the silver-tressed wonder being playful and interacting with her audience. Needless to say, with Paula’s Party, viewers will have an inside view into what makes Deen so special – a clever wit, hearty laugh, and shear genius at making people feel good.

Deen appears regularly on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The View,” and other leading programs. She recently had an opportunity to have a major acting role in Cameron Crowe’s film Elizabethtown starring Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, and Susan Sarandon.

K10950 - Paula Deen 11-piece Stainless Steel & Copper Cookware Set 2.7 5 123 123
Disappointed I purchased this item back in early 2008 not only did the copper rims discolor quickly, the bottoms of the skillet and 5 quart pot both have warped and now does not cook evenly 01-03-11
Paula Dean Copper Cookware This product is actually great. Copper reqires some additonal work - so does ANY stainless steel product ,in addition to Copper. To keep it looking like it came out of the box....it takes a litte work. No ,you cant put any of that in the dishwasher and expect it to look good. That goes for not only this cookware set...but the most high end you can buy. Try a little "Bartenters Friend". It will sparkle !!! Thank you Paul Dean for a cost effective and GOOD product. My Southern Fried Chicken tasted as good as my Mamo used to make! 09-12-10
Brings Back Some Good Childhood Memories! My Mother would LOVE too know I now own a set of cookware, like she had. LOVE LOVE LOVE this set!!! Effortless Easy Cleanup. Get This Set. You Wont Reget It,I KNOW I DONT! 09-08-10
Good pans I bought these pans, and soked them for the 20 minutes in baking soda and water. I knew already that you have to use special products to clean copper with and had the copper cleaner ready for these pans. They do discolor on the bottom when you cook with them, but with the copper cleaner it comes of like magic. They are what you should expect from any type of copper pans. You have to clean them with the propper cleaner, and the look just like new when you are done. It is unfortunate that they have such a low review, because they are really nice pans. I think there were just a lot of people who expected to be able to put these in the dishwasher. That is not how copper pans work. If you do not want to take the time to maintain copper cookwear then you should not buys these, but if you want some beautiful pans than take a little extra care these are great. The square frying pan is really nice too. Also take note that only the frying pans are nonstick. I would love to get a dutch oven in this design with a nonstick coating. This would be primarily for fudge at Christmas time though. I am not recomending this as a gift because it would depend on the person idea of what they want in their cookwear. 09-06-10
horrible!! i bought this for the quality that was presented. when i received the pots i soaked them just like the intructions said to, but to my suprise once i started cooking black spot appeared, the copper turned ugly grey color, i sent them back.. sorry Paula Dean your product team really failed this time..now im waiting on my refund and heading to Target 09-03-10
MONEY WASTED After very little use.....copper bottoms warped ......non-stick material wearing off edges. Poor quality items. 07-11-10
Not worth the money I got these as a Christmas gift from my mother. She thought these would be a really nice gift as my grandmother had copper bottom pans the whole time she and I were both growing up and they looked great even by the time I was born and up until her death then my mom had them until she had a house fire and lost them. This set, we soaked and cleaned the pans as the instructions said and my mom being her usual self, cleaned and soaked them a second time as directed. Well, first time I used them they discolored and had big black spots on them. I got some copper cleaner and scrubbed and then my husband scrubbed on them and they looked a little better but were still discolored. I can not leave them out for anyone to see since they are so discolored. My mom is coming to visit in a couple of weeks and really dread her seeing how bad they look. I am sure it will make her feel badly. I have some of the CE stainless steel sauce pans that are gorgeous and still look like new. Those and my enamel coated cast iron are the only pieces I would want anyone to see, sure not this set. The only reason I gave them two stars is because they do not stick. About the same as my CE pans. 07-03-10
I like them These pieces do require a little work to keep them nice looking but not much more than normal. If you clean the copper with a half a lemon and some kosher salt, they clean right up and look beautiful. The pieces I use most, (square griddle pan and press) are really great! The other pieces have fallen out of favor simply because I've become infatuated with enameled cast iron. 03-23-10
THE BEST EVER I BOUGHT THESE POTS LAST YEAR AND I WISH I HAD STARTED USING THEM SOONER, THEY DON'T STICK AND VERY EVEN TEMPEMTURE. GREAT GIFT FOR SOMEONE WHO COOKS ALOT. THANKS PAULA FOREVER 11-06-08
hate it they turned ugly and discolored after the first use. the bottoms burn. i wasted my money. 09-23-08
Disappointed Buyer I received this product and it looked great coming out of the box. I followed the instructions and pre-soaked each piece (which was a pain) before using them. They still spotted terribly. I was going to put them on my pot rack, but they are not presentable enough to keep in the open or use when I have company.. For cooking purposes, the cookware was average. I bought this line because Paul Deen endorsed it, but was very disappointed in what I received. Would not buy anything from Paula's line again, based on this purchase. 07-10-08
Would not buy. Bought this set because the copper is good for even heat distribution, I followed all instructions to the letter before using them, washing them in vinager and baking soda. The copper still became splotchy and miscolored on both lids and bottom of pans. I have a smooth cook top range. Should have sent them back but the box got pitched. Big disappointment for the cost. 06-19-08
