About Amber
Amber

Stone Information & Mining

Amber is an organic gem. Organic gems are the products of living or once-living organisms and biological processes. Amber formed tens of millions of years ago, when sap from ancient trees hardened and fossilized. Amber is sometimes called "gold of the North." Its warm luster is featured in beads, carvings, pendants, and cabochons, as well as decorative items like cups, bowls, snuff boxes, and umbrella handles. A related material, called copal, is also fossilized tree resin, but it's far younger than amber, at less than a million years old. Some types of amber are found in the ground. Other types have been freed and carried by tides, ending up on beaches or near-shore areas. The Baltic coast bordering Germany, Poland, and Russia is still an important source of amber.

Legend & Lore

Scientists and collectors treasure amber that contains suspended animal or plant fragments. These fossilized bits of once-living things were trapped in the hardening amber, creating a fascinating time capsule. Amber is probably best known for its insect and other types of inclusions. Millions of years ago, when amber oozed from countless plants, the substance acted as a sticky trap for ants, bees, termites, and other insects. Flower parts, leaves, and pine needles are also typical amber inclusions, along with gas bubbles. Amber containing larger animals like scorpions, snails, frogs, and lizards can be very valuable—especially if the animal "inclusions" are preserved intact.

Color

Although consumers are most familiar with yellow and golden amber, the gem can be white, yellow, and orange to reddish brown. Rarely, strong fluorescence can give amber a bluish or greenish appearance, which when attractive can be highly valuable.

Cleaning

The only safe way to clean amber is with warm, soapy water. Be sure to use a mild soap.

Beautiful!! Ordered two sets to give to my daughters for Christmas, but I like them so much I may have to order another for myself. The craftsmanship is excellent and the amber a substantial presence without being overwhelming. Can't wait for the holidays. 10-04-12
SEE WHY THESE SWANS EARNED ALL-STAR POPULARITY... ...THE DESIGNER OF THE Amber Swan deserves a bevy of accolades for the superbly-crafted Dangle Earrings. The Silverwork alone is out-of-this-orbit! The Q package arrived at my door this date, the day of my birth -- no kidding! Although I was initially drawn to the earring set because of the Amber and handcrafting in my homeland, my Polish eyes were stunned (and still are) when I opened the box to view the prize! And my Polish heart beat four-times faster! The dictionary/thesaurus, plus a Rhodes Scholar would have so many words to describe this Amber accompanied by the sterling Silver Swan treasure fashioned with graceful care. The texture of the magnificent Swan is ‘run-your-fingers over it desire and calling’, as each Swan uninhibited turns its head downward to rest its beak on the extremely high-grade of Amber set at its torso area. The north/south Amber oval cabochons are among the top of the grade-A list for clarity, inner markings and color created by nature and crafted by humans. Grand is the left/right earlobe placement as the Swans bow their heads to each other -- acknowledging one-to-the-other's impressive, significant beauty. Dear ‘Polska’ -- Designer, Crafter, and Vendor, along with QVC & their buyer: "Dziekuje bardzo wie calem serce" for the top-of-the-line Amber & Swan which now grace my ear-lobes. They hold a special place in my heart for the rest of the twilight years left to me. And my words in this review are not a 'Swan Song', but from my Polska serce! P.S. With all my being, I hope that QVC staff will direct this review to the company/vendor/seller which sponsored such a fine representation of Amber, and the Silver Swan to come my way! Thank you and I honor this finery with fifty-stars shining as bright on a clear night as much as the Silver Swan and Amber. 08-16-12
Just Fabulous These earrings are a WOW. The amber is gorgeous, the design is beautiful. I was impressed with the weight of them. They are not heavy, but they have enough weight to hang properly. Love that there is a right and left earring, too. 07-10-12
A Wow ! Color of the stone is so rich and beautiful amber, just like what you see in the picture. Nicely made, little ornate for my normal earrings, but I am keeping them just because work of art and conversational piece. 04-20-12
Beautiful Earrings I just had to say how stunning these earrings are in person. I really could not believe the shine and the color of the stone. I highly recommend them!!! 04-14-12
these are stunning These are beautiful. I love that they are opposites, have a right & a left. Too many times earrings should be and designers don't make the effort. The amber is pretty. Mine do not have a lot of specks in the amber, it is translucent, but I didn't really buy them because of the amber, I bought them for the swans. The design and detail is stunning. The workmanship is excellent. They are not heavy but they are not thin and cheap. I have an amber and turquoise necklace to wear these with. I say if you think they are pretty online I think you will be pleased with them in person. I would love to see these with turquoise or clear quartz. I would purchase them again. More pieces, ring, necklace would be so cool! 04-07-12
