A Note from the Designer

"The Japanese revere the grasshopper's song, believing the moon inspires its music. In China, the grasshopper is a symbol of happiness, good health, good luck, abundance, and virtue. Native Americans consider the grasshopper a harbinger of joyful news. The grasshopper springs us into magical realms and teaches us to see the 'big picture.' The lines of its body are perfect for a three-dimensional sculpture. Green quartz promotes growth and abundance, and I've placed a green-toned mother-of-pearl under Limon® quartz to give it a luminescent glow. The amethyst, a crown chakra stone, is specially carved for the grasshopper's head and is a stone of intuition, spirituality, and mediation."

—Barbara Bixby

About Amethyst

Stone Information & Mining

Amethyst is the purple variety of the quartz mineral species. It's the gem that's most commonly associated with the color purple, even though there are other purple gemstones such as sapphire and tanzanite. Its purple color can be cool and bluish, or a reddish purple that's sometimes referred to as "raspberry."

Legend & Lore

Because of its wine-like color, early Greek legends associated amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine. Other legends reflected beliefs that amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick-witted in battle and in business affairs. Fine amethysts have been set in religious jewelry and royal crown jewels for ages. It was once considered equal in value to ruby, emerald, and sapphire. It's no wonder that fine amethyst adorns the fingers of bishops as well as the coronation regalia of British royalty.

Amethyst's purple color can range from a light lilac to a deep, intense royal purple and from brownish to vivid. Amethyst also commonly shows what is called color zoning, which in the case of amethyst usually consists of angular zones of darker to lighter color.

Amethyst can be safely cleaned with warm soapy water. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe except in the rare instances where a stone is dyed or treated by fracture filling. Steam cleaning is not recommended, and amethyst should not be subjected to heat.

About Barbara Bixby
Barbara Bixby

Jewelry designer Barbara Bixby began her studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City at the age of 16. Although she started out with a focus on sculpture, she soon fell in love with jewelry design. "I love what I do as a jewelry designer. I am extremely lucky to have found my passion early for what would ultimately become my career," enthused Bixby.

After finishing her education, Bixby took a variety of jobs that allowed her to become more familiar with the world of fine jewelry. Eventually she was asked to design a personal collection for an established designer that was the initial inspiration to create her current collections.

In need of fresh inspiration, Bixby spent a year traveling the world and painting. Upon her return, she continued to develop collections for many highly renowned design houses before moving on to create her own intricate pieces. "My current collection is my most exciting undertaking to date. I use the jewelry medium to create a piece of art, with precious metal as my three-dimensional canvas and gemstones as my color palette."

Each piece combines Bixby's distinctive drawing style, her love of symbolism, and the unique attributes of gemstones. Her influences and inspirations come from a variety of sources - some as far-reaching as Asia and Europe and others as personal as her garden and country home. More than anything, though, her love of art has remained the driving force behind her work.

"I love to see people take my jewelry and make it their own. The way we present ourselves is an expression of our greatest work of art, the soul."

Rated 5 out of 5 by WOW!!! I have wanted this enhancer for a long time, and finally decided to order it during the 6 easy pay/Q card event last week. I just received it yesterday and it is STUNNING!! The green/yellow body of the grasshopper does actually have a soft glow, and it is beautiful. The amethyst head is exquisitely carved, and the over all silver workmanship is nothing short of stunning! I purchased a 20 inch silver snake chain to wear it on,and it's perfect. The size of the grasshopper is big and bold and every aspect is just so well crafted and lovely. I cannot say enough good things about it! I know it's an investment, but I plan on wearing it everyday, everywhere and with everything! 04-07-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by AMAZING!!! Unique, Symbolic and GORGEOUS art!!! The craftsmanship, the gemstone quality, the materials used and the spectacular design in this pendant is remarkable. The ethereal green mother of pearl, crowned with the sparkle of faceted crystal and the beautifully carved amethyst, is enchanting. This glorious enhancer has an elegance about it, and the graceful flow of design adds to the magic, captivating the onlooker. For those of us who love the gentle, friendly grasshopper, this is a must have. They remind us of the delicate balance of nature and, perhaps, the passion to leap forward and do good when the moment presents itself. This wonderful pendant a real treasure. 11-10-15

Rated 5 out of 5 by LOVE IT! I have ALWAYS loved critters and this one is fabulous! Actually, the back and the sides are pretty amazing! The one I received has a beautiful inner glow and the coloring on the body is "blackened" just like the photo. It is a large piece and might scare some, but not me. This will be one of my favorite enhancers and I look forward to the comments. Just call me Grasshoppah! 06-23-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing, totally amazing. Not much to say except, WOW!! I'm glad I didn't miss out on this grasshopper. I wish that the enhancer was larger, but I can deal with that. 06-14-15
Rated 3 out of 5 by Pretty This grasshopper is lovely but not worth 500$. I don't think it should be more than 300. The doublet is dull. Just couldn't justify the cost once I saw it. 06-02-15
Rated 1 out of 5 by Too expensive, but love it I love this pendant but it is too expensive. QVC think of us all on a budget. 05-16-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by Superb work, just not for me I have coveted this pendant for the longest time and I finally purchased it. I must say that the workmanship is quite remarkable, but in terms of the perceived value, I'm just not that impressed. The color of the grasshopper's body is enhanced when viewed on television versus seeing it in person. If gold was still trending at between $1700-$2200 an ounce I might be able to equate the price versus the tiny amount of 18K gold dabbed at both ends of the body, but it's not. I'm not opposed to spending money on jewelry - this item just wasn't a good buy for me. You may deem otherwise. It is quite unique. 02-03-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by True Artistry This is one of my favorite pieces of silver and gemstone jewelry. There is a lot of detail and it is just so interesting. I never fail to get complements when I wear it. Barbara Bixby's jewelry continually surprises, amazes, and delights. 01-31-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by BEAUTIFUL ART WORK HERE! Large and beautiful. I love this pendant and get lots of compliments when I wear it. 01-03-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by A REAL SHOW HOPPER ! I MEAN STOP-HER ! This is a piece of work! At first view I thought this was insanely bizarre to wear, I don't like bugs of any kind but after a few revisits....the grasshopper had me hooked !! It is abit pricey but gotta say wore it once to a bridal shower and I felt like some of the attention was about me. IT IS DIFFERENT....and QVC knows how to present it to want it and the women there wanted to know where I got it. NEVER would have bought it for the price....the little bit of gold on it is just that for the asking price. It was a farewell gift from a bunch of co-workers so ...it was a going away gift.Going out for dinner with those girls tomorrow night to show it off and I think it will be a hit again. 10-02-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love My Little Guy! I had my eye on this piece for a while but since it was at a higher price point it sat on my wish list. That is until my birthday when my mom surprised me with it! Thank you mommy! I love him! This piece is everything I thought it would be and beyond. Gorgeous! It's an investment but so worth it! If you're a BB fan and collector this piece is required ;) 09-05-14
