Royal Palace® Rugs: About Rug Shedding
Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, or when rubber-soled shoes—like sneakers—break off small wool fibers. This won't affect the wear of the rug. After receiving your new rug, we recommend that you vigorously vacuum it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, with the brush set at a low setting. Repeat this for 2-3 days; it's okay if you fill more than one vacuum bag or canister's worth. This vigorous vacuuming will not harm the rug and will help minimize shedding. You can then vacuum regularly with the brush at a medium or high setting, alternating with an upholstery attachment. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. You'll find wool fibers in the vacuum bag but, again, this won't affect the wear of your rug.

Royal Palace FAQ

What does it mean when you talk about the "density" or "construction" of the rug, such as 70 line, 80 line, 120 line, 160 line, and 200 line?

This refers to the number of tufts in a linear foot, or 12 inches. It is a measurement of the wool pile's density. The higher the density, the more detail that can be achieved in a design. The higher the density, the more intricate shading that can be achieved. All of this results in a higher degree of design clarity. Also, a higher density rug will wear longer and be more durable.

How do I decide what size rug to buy for a room?

Dining room: We recommend a 7'6" x 10' size or larger rug. This depends on the size of your room and the size of your dining room table, both when it is closed and opened with any added leaves. Ideally, you want all of the chairs around the table to remain on the rug when a person sits in the chair and moves the chair away from the table.

Living room: We recommend a size based on the size of your living room and how you want to decorate it. One way is to purchase a large rug, size 7'6" x 10' and up, which fills the open floor space as much as possible, even with chairs and a sofa or loveseat on top of the rug. Another possibility is to create a small conversation area. Here, you could choose a rug between 5' x 7'6" and 6' x 9' in size. Set the sofa or loveseat and/or chairs off the rug to create a conversation setting.

Family room: The same suggestions apply as with the living room.

Bedroom: Again, this depends on the size of the room, but generally you can use accent-size rugs on either side of the bed and at the foot. If your room is very large, a nice decorating idea is to place the bed over a 5' x 7'6" rug with half of it coming out from underneath the bed into the room.

How do I care for my Royal Palace® rug?

We suggest you use a rug pad underneath if the rug is placed on a hard surface floor. This will prevent the rug from sliding, which can cause accidents. If your rug is placed over plush pile carpeting you will experience "bunching" and "wrinkling", especially if furniture is placed on top of it. To minimize this, we suggest double-sided "tacky" rug-to-rug padding. Rotate your rugs periodically. Over the years, foot traffic and sunlight patterns can cause fading or uneven wear if the rug is not occasionally rotated.

Vacuuming is the best way to remove everyday dirt and dust. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. Please set the brush of your vacuum cleaner to a high position so that it is not brushing the pile too harshly. This will cause premature wear and shedding.

Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, and also when rubber-soled shoes, like sneakers, break off small wool fibers. It will not affect the wear of the rug. After vacuuming you will find wool fibers in the vacuum bag – this is normal. These are stray fibers or fibers that the brush breaks off, and this will not affect the wear of your rug.

What is a hand-hooked rug?

This is a looped-pile type of construction. This means that the yarn is tufted from the front of the rug into a foundation creating a loop for the pile. This is a low pile loop. There are three qualities of hand-hooked rugs based on the density and size of the loop. Gross Point has a large loop, Petit Point has a smaller loop, and Micro Point has a very tiny loop. The smaller the loop, the more detail that can be achieved in the design.

What is a hand-tufted rug?

This is basically the same method of construction as the hand-hooked rug, but with one major difference: the wool is tufted from the back of the rug into a foundation. The loop is set higher and then cut, so it no longer is a loop, but rather a "cut" pile.

What is a hand-knotted rug?

A hand-knotted rug is the most difficult to make because every knot is created and tied by hand. These knots are tied around a warp, which is a series of parallel threads running through the entire length of the rug, and then around a weft, the threads running across the width of the rug inserted between all of the rows of knots. The knot is the term used for a strand of wool yarn that is looped around two adjacent warp threads and cut to form the pile or surface of the rug. This type of rug allows for the most intricate and detailed designs. The fringe on a hand-knotted rug is the visible continuation of the warp threads at both ends of the rug.

How is wool processed from the sheep to the rug?

  1. First, the sheep are "shorn". Then, the fleece is washed to remove any foreign materials.
  2. Next, the wool is sorted by quality. We use only the better section of the sheep's fleece, which gives the rug's wool excellent strength, luster, resilience, softness, and durability.
  3. Then, the wool is carded to align the fibers and combed to remove the short fibers. The result is called worsted yarn.
  4. We then spin the wool into a single strand of yarn of different counts or thickness. The strands are twisted together into different types or grades of ply, such as 4 ply, 5 ply, etc.

Art Deco on the floor. This is a beautiful piece of art for your floor. I bought this to replace a larger oriental rug that I had for years. This is beautiful, I wish it was a little larger and that it did not shed so much. I have owned several oriental rugs over the years and have never had such a problem with shedding as this rug has. That is the only downfall of owning this rug. Its been over a year and it is still shedding and it doesn't get much traffic either. 11-20-12
I love this rug... I bought this rug to place over an open of carpet in my bedroom,my favorite corner of the rug is the plum corner, its a beautiful color; the coloring is rich modren colors but "waterd down", compliments so many different decors. I couldnt decide on this or the round but ended up chosing this one; wish i had the space for another one in the bedroom 07-07-12
Best Rug Ever This is my first rug purchase on QVC and I couldn't be happier. This rug is large, thick and absolutely beautiful in my foyer. I was concerned the colors would be faded, however, they are very vibrant. This rug looks much more expensive than it is. Thank you Royal Palace. I can't wait to purchase it in a larger size for my dining room. 06-07-12
Gorgeous!!!!! I just received this rug for my family room. It's BEAUTIFUL. My floors are tile throughout the house. This rug warms the family room and adds a beautiful touch of color. Don't hesitate on this one. The colors are blended beautifully and this rug will go with many different decors. Even my husband loves it! I'm very, very satisfied with Royal Palace. 04-14-12
Update to room with antique furniture!! This watercolored rug ,with gorgeous Art Nouveau flowers is just what I've been searching for to update my entry.I have a small victorian settee in a burnt sienna velvet that looks divine on this rug that has so many great colors. The rug goes great with mahogany furniture. There are wonderful shades of gold, salmon, sage.lilac and sky blue. The blue was the other color I wanted to pull out in this space as I have wedgewood blue antique print drapes. The blue in the rug matches well with Kenneth Brown set of 2 throws H167257.This rug looks so divine with antique furniture. 02-27-12
Love this rug! I'm very picky and wanted something different so I started with the 3x5. A few months later I ordered the 6x6 round. Now I'm ordering the 4'6"x6'6". It really wakes up a neutral space with a splash of color. The quality is great and nothing looks as good as a wool rug. You don't see this type of rug in a store, at least not for this price! If it sheds, that just means it's time to vacuum! 01-31-12
Royal Palace Watercolors Wool Rug I just finished remodeling our den. This rug was the feature of the room. It is beautiful beyond words. We have gotten many compliments on this room. I was really on the fence about buying it. But the moment I opened it up I fell in love with it. Take the chance and you won't regret it. This rug matches so many wall colors I will be enjoying it for years to come. Shirley P., Amesbury, Ma. 10-17-11
OOOO .....EMMM..... GGGGGG I've always liked Royal Palace rugs... But this one surpasses all other previous ones I've ordered. It's the design.. just gorgeous... with gorgeous colors!! The rug is thick, well made, but the design is pure art. You will love it. It's just beauty personified. 10-10-11
Pleasant Surprise!!!!!!!! For some reason I had the impression from the online photo that the colors were primarily pastel and I thought there was rose and blue and yellow. When I opened the package and saw the real colors I was thrilled. The terracota, burnt orange, brick red, different shades of green, chocolate brown, yellows, and blues are stunning to me. It is so different from most of the rugs I see that I couldn't have been more impressed or pleased. Thank you Royal Palace and QVC! 06-30-11
RE: Shedding I have found that the stronger your vaccuum the less problems you have with the shedding. I own a Dyson and have only vaccuumed the rug once a week. Yes I see some wool shedding that happens but it is not bad or excessive. These rugs are too beautiful to not own. 06-20-11
SO BEAUTIFUL!!! JUST THE POP THAT WAS NEEDED UNDER MY DINETTE SET. SUCH A BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORMATION OF THAT PLAIN SPACE. JUST LOVE IT! 04-17-11
Absolutely Gorgeous!! This is the most gorgeous design! When I unrolled this rug, I couldn't stop staring at it. The design is extraordinary! I have to move it so it doesn't overshadow the other Royal Palace rugs in the family room. I'm going to order the round one and use both rugs in my living room -- a rather contemporary room. I can't wait to see how they look together! 02-13-11
