About Featherbeds

Care and Use

  • Use a Cover
If used with a cover, your featherbed should only need to be cleaned every three to five years.

  • Professionally Launder Your Featherbed Every Three to Five Years
Call the cleaner before taking them the featherbed to ensure they have experience with feather products. To spot clean the fabric, push the fill out of the way and use a mild detergent, or use soap and a bit of water. Be sure to use as little water as possible, as wetting the fill may cause the feathers to mildew or disintegrate.

  • Shake and Fluff Your Featherbed on a Regular Basis
If your feather distribution becomes uneven, redistribute the fill by placing the featherbed on a flat surface and pushing the feathers to the desired location. To push the feathers, use the palm of your hand and your forearm.

  • Store Your Featherbed in a Breathable Bag
Avoid storing featherbeds in plastic bags. That can trap moisture and cause the fill to mildew or disintegrate.

Featherbed FAQs

What is fill power?
Fill power refers to the quality of the down in our down-topped featherbeds. The higher the fill power, the better the quality, as it’ll loft better, stay fluffier, last longer, and insulate better. Our featherbeds are generously filled with high-quality feather, Eurofeather, Eurodown, or a combination of feather and down.

Why are there different constructions?
Featherbeds come in a variety of constructions. Closed constructions, such as a Baffle Box, prevent fill shifting and require less fluffing and maintenance. Open constructions, such as a Baffle Channel or Framed Cross Tack, need more regular fluffing and maintenance. They stay fluffier and last longer over time because feather can travel throughout the featherbed. Most featherbeds have baffles sewn into the seams, allowing air to flow freely, creating a fluffier featherbed.

What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads contained in one-square inch of fabric. Higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns. They’re softer and more luxurious and breathable. Featherbeds require a more durable and tighter weave than other filled products so the feather doesn't leak or travel through the fabric. Featherbeds feature a very tight weave instead of a high thread count. This makes the fabric leak-proof and more durable than other bedding products.

How do I make my bed with a featherbed?

There are many ways to do this. Choose from three easy ways to use your featherbed:

  1. Place your featherbed on the mattress. Cover both with one fitted sheet. Deep pocket sheets work the best.
  2. Cover your mattress with a fitted sheet. Place the featherbed on top. Cover the featherbed with another fitted sheet.
  3. Cover your mattress with a fitted sheet. Purchase a featherbed protector or make one using your favorite sheet fabric. (It works like a big pillow case!)

Virtually Allergen-free

All of our down and feather is Hyperclean® a special washing process that uses biodegradable soaps, washing up to eight times, to remove all of the dirt, dust, and allergens from the down/feather. Northern Nights is the only company that uses Hyperclean down and feather. Very few people are actually allergic to down/feather, but many are allergic to dust and dirt. Hyperclean makes our goods virtually allergy-free.

Construction Terms

When it comes to getting the most out of your bedding, understanding construction is key. Reference the helpful guide below for important terminology.

baffling Baffling: This construction type uses sewn-in cloth "walls" to keep the fill in your bedding in place.

Sewn-through Boxes Sewn-through Boxes: Constructed by sewing horizontal and vertical stitches into a comforter’s top and bottom layers, these boxes keep fill from clumping.

Channels Channels: Created by sewing the top and bottom layers of the comforter together, channels use horizontal or vertical columns to keep fill in place.

Gusseting Gusseting: This construction technique creates outer side walls to secure a comforter's top and bottom layers together. It helps a comforter appear loftier and fuller.

Diamond Stitch Diamond Stitch: This stitching pattern locks fill in place for a low-maintenance design that provides a polished look for the bed.

Absolute Luxury! This is my second feather bed purchase. The first one came from another network and it was adequate. This one is much better! The baffle box construction allows the feather bed to be refreshed each time I make the bed. My husband and I sleep on a CK bed. My husband is 350 lbs. He flattens his side of the bed every week, but the handles are so convenient, even my 12 year old was able to help me get it fluffed up tonight. We have had the feather bed since last January. I have noticed that I do have to fluff it weekly. I have back problems, so if I don't take care of it, it will do me in. But as long as I take care of it, it is like sleeping on a cloud. I highly recommend this purchase. Another thing, the feathers do not poke through. That is something that happened with the other featherbed. 01-22-12
