Worthless piece of junk
I thought that I was having problems with the TomTom VIA 1405 because it was my first GPS device and I didn't know how to use it properly. After reading reviews from others that have had devices in the past, I realize that this is just a piece of junk. I too have had the device to give me directions that took me to places unknown!
When updating the device I have to continuously unplug and re-plug it because it will spool but never connect to the computer. The first two updates I had it plugged into my computer for over an hour only to find out that it wasn't actually updating.
Definitely pay attention to the reviews and don't buy this product!!

Easy and Perfect Size
This is my first Tom Tom GPS. I am very happy with it and all the little extras, like the speed turning red if I'm going over the speed limit is a nice touch. That it shows me all the info, distance to location along with ETA, where other GPS's you have to pick one or the other. I dont' understand the negative reviews because it does what it says it's going to do... Haven't used the traffic portion of the GPS yet, but I'm sure on vacation it will come in useful :)

Not exactly what I thought
Bought this product because thought the screen was bigger then my current GPS and for the traffic maps and lifetime updates. Just used over the weekend and the screen is much smaller then appears on TV, the directions that are given aren't the best route to the place and also the volume is not great for someone hard of hearing (doesn't get very loud). I would not have order if I would have know these things.

Should have read the reviews
I usually do a bit of research before buying products, but I figured since I had a Tom Tom, this one would be as good. This thing has taken me places, I and riders didn't know existed...and the places were not keyed in. The addresses were correct and there was no new construction, so I am perplexed as to why I ended up on the side of dark mountain. No, do the research, read the reviews and guide yourself away from this one.

He likes it
I have mixed feelings about this Tom-Tom. What my husband likes best is that places of interest, hotels,resturants, hospitals have the phone numbers. And Tom-Tom is addressing the issues that are listed in other reviews. There are quite a few occaions that the directions where the long way around.. and the computer voice is anoying... but this was for my huband and he is happy.

FRUSTRATING, DIFFICULT TO USE
After repeated calls to TomTom customer service, going to YouTube trying to find videos of how to work this thing, and never being able to use it easily, I've decided it's easier to go to the store, buy a map and pull the car over and read it than it is to use this frustrating thing!
And cheaper too!

NICE GIFT
I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY HUSBAND AND HE REALLY LIKES IT. THE ONLY REASON I GAVE IT 4 STARS IS BECAUSE HE SAID THAT SOMETIMES IT WILL TELL HIM TO TURN L WHEN CLEARLY HE NEEDS TO TURN RIGHT...99% OF THE TIME ,THE GAGET IS RIGHT ON AND HELPFUL.

Not good
I loved my old TomTom, so thought I would take a chance on this one. After an hr on customer support, HE gave up. So back in the box it goes. Got the Garmin on sale, the registration worked fine along with the map update. using it this weekend.
Don't bother ordering this one!

Good Product with a Pause. . . .
Okay, okay, I admit it--I almost did not order this GPS due to the reviews. I have another Tomtom device that has worked great, but it did not come with lifetime maps and would cost $72 dollars just to update one time. Too much in my opinion! But due to my past experience with Tomtom, I decided to give it a try, thinking that I could always return it if it turned out to be as bad as the reviews said it was.
So I got it yesterday, and immediately took it out of the box and headed for my computer to start it up since I wanted the maximum time to play with it and make my decision on it's quality before our summer vacation next month. Yes, at first it was maddening; had to enter my info more than once, promo code would not work, etc, . . . but I am not one to give up easily so I called the company and they had it fixed in 2 minutes (okay, AFTER waiting on hold for 10 minutes) and then able to download current maps. WORKS PERFECTLY NOW AND COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!!!! Call the company, be patient and IT WILL WORK! Happy travels to all with this device.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!
I have owned and used another TomTom GPS product for several years with good luck. I was interested in the VIA 1405TM for its traffic information function. Unfortunately, this unit has an issue: you cannot activate its two key features of Lifetime Traffic and Lifetime Maps using the activation code provided. You will receive an error message that the code is not compatible with the version of software running on the device.
Some quick research online revealed that this has been a known issue with this device since it was first launched. It is still not resolved and yet they keep shipping them. I have recommended with my return information (yes, I've boxed it up and its going back) to QVC that they should pull this item and not continue selling a box of frustration to its customers. Me STRONG recommendation to you is that you heed the warnings here among these reviews and spare yourself the $7 return shipping fee and a frustrating experience. Don't buy this unit!

Very disappointed
I received my Tom Tom and happy I finally tried it before the return window closed.
It could not find my home address, center of my town, or take me to a correct address for a funeral.
I am going to purchase the Garmin.

Disappointed
I had high expectations for this but had to return it. As my husband was driving down the road in Montana it told him he was in North Dakota, then it would change back to Montana...strange. Must be defective??
