FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is WEN?
A: WEN is a revolutionary new concept in cleansing your hair that has Hollywood buzzing. It was developed as an alternative to the way people are used to cleansing their hair. WEN Cleansing Conditioners replace shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, and leave-in conditioner, giving you five products in one bottle.

Q: Will WEN really clean my hair? Won't I need shampoo?
A: WEN uses a combination of natural extracts and botanicals to hydrate and cleanse your hair without the use of harsh detergents or chemicals. The perfect mixture and blend of ingredients leaves your hair looking healthy, moisturized, and cleansed.

Q: What's the difference between shampoo & WEN Cleansing Conditioners?
A: First of all, WEN cleanses your hair without harsh detergents or chemicals, leaving it clean and hydrated without stripping or lathering. Since WEN doesn't contain any sodium laurel/laureth sulfates, it doesn't strip your natural oils or color, so your shade will stay vibrant longer.

Q: How do you use WEN Cleansing Conditioners?
A: If you're using the 16-oz or 6-oz sizes, rinse your hair thoroughly, then apply 12–20 pumps of WEN into your palms and rub them together (we recommend 20–40 pumps for thicker/longer hair). Apply it to your scalp and add a splash of water for a foaming effect. Since WEN has no detergents or sodium lauryl sulfate, it won't lather. Massage it thoroughly into your hair, comb it through, and leave it in for the duration of your shower for maximum cleansing and conditioning. Rinse your hair thoroughly and completely, massaging your scalp and running your fingers through to the ends. Apply 1/2–1 pump (depending on your hair length and texture) to soaking wet hair as a leave-in conditioner. For best results, we suggest that you cleanse, rinse, and repeat using half of the recommended pumps for the first cleanse and the remaining half of the pumps for the second cleanse.

Cleansing Conditioner should be applied in four sections: crown, nape, ends on the right, and ends on the left. For hair above the ears, use a minimum of 12 pumps (three pumps per section). For hair above the shoulders, use a minimum of 16 pumps (four pumps per section). For hair down to the shoulders, use a minimum of 24 pumps (six pumps per section). For hair past the shoulders, use a minimum of 32 pumps (eight pumps per section). For hair to your mid-back, use a minimum of 40 pumps (10 pumps per section). For thicker/coarser hair, increase the number of pumps in order to thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hydrate your ends.

If you're using the 32-oz size, rinse your hair thoroughly, then apply 8–16 pumps of WEN into your palms and rub them together (we recommend 16–24 pumps for thicker/longer hair). Apply it to your scalp and add a splash of water for a foaming effect. Massage it thoroughly into your hair, comb it through, and leave it in for the duration of your shower for maximum cleansing and conditioning. Rinse your hair thoroughly and completely, massaging your scalp and running your fingers through to the ends. Apply 1/4–1/2 pump (depending on your hair length and texture) to soaking wet hair as a leave-in conditioner. For best results, we suggest that you cleanse, rinse, and repeat using half of the recommended pumps for the first cleanse and the remaining half of the pumps for the second cleanse.

Cleansing Conditioner should be applied in four sections: crown, nape, ends on the right, and ends on the left. For hair above the ears, use a minimum of eight pumps (two pumps per section). For hair above the shoulders, use a minimum of 12 pumps (three pumps per section). For hair down to the shoulders, use a minimum of 16 pumps (four pumps per section). For hair past the shoulders, use a minimum of 20 pumps (five pumps per section). For hair to your mid-back, use a minimum of 24 pumps (six pumps per section). For thicker/coarser hair, increase the number of pumps in order to thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hydrate your ends.

Q: How many pumps are in each bottle?
A: The approximate number of pumps depends on the bottle size:

6 oz: 60 pumps
16 oz: 160 pumps
32 oz: 192 pumps (standard WEN), 120 pumps (Six Thirteen)

Q: Why won't my pump unlock/open?
A: The pumps on the Cleansing Conditioners are actually very easy to open. The easiest way to release one you're having trouble with is to set the bottle on a hard surface and, while applying slight downward pressure to the pump head, turn in a counterclockwise direction.

Q: I got the pump unlocked, now why won't any product pump out?
A: New pumps will take several pumps to do what we call "prime." If you've pumped it more than 15 times and no product is coming through, please remove the pump from the bottle to ensure that the dip tube is still attached. If it is, please contact Customer Service for a replacement.

Q: My product is low in the bottle. Why isn't the pump working?
A: This is a common problem for all lotion-type products in pump bottles. The nice thing about WEN is that you can see through our bottles so you know how much you have left. First, gently tap the bottle on a hard surface to remove any possible air pockets that have formed at the base of the dip tube. This should get your pump going again. As the product gets lower in the bottle, the pump may stop working again, which is due to the thickness of the product. The best way to get the remainder out of the bottle is to add some warm water and shake it thoroughly to mix the remaining product. While this will slightly dilute the formula, its cleansing properties won't be diminished. The reason we don't create WEN in a more fluid form is because we'd have to dilute the product from the start.

Q: My hair looks greasy and/or weighed down. I tried using less of the product & it hasn't helped. What's wrong?
A: One of the most common misconceptions about WEN products is that they work like traditional conditioners, meaning the more you use, the greasier your hair will be. This couldn't be further from the truth! In fact, if you aren't using enough of the Cleansing Conditioner, it won't be able to clean your hair. The correct number of pumps varies depending on a number of traits, including length, texture, etc. If you want to be safe, the more WEN you use, the better. You may also obtain better results if you cleanse, rinse, and repeat.

Q: How many times a week should I use WEN? Will it damage my hair if I use it every day?
A: The more you use WEN, the better! You can use it twice every day and it'll simply hydrate and moisturize your hair. In fact, when you first start out with our product, we generally suggest that you use it every day. It'll help rehydrate your hair and it'll appear healthier with each cleansing.

Q: How do I use WEN as an overnight treatment?
A: Start out by cleansing your hair like you normally would. After you're done thoroughly rinsing out the Cleansing Conditioner, reapply with half the number of pumps (or more for added benefits), or apply the WEN Re-Moist Hydrating Mask. Splash your hair with water, massage it vigorously, and comb it through with a wide-tooth comb. Then, either wrap your hair in a towel or wear a shower cap and leave it on for as long as possible, which would ideally be overnight. However, even 15–20 minutes

Q: When should I use the WEN oils?
A: The oils are very multipurpose. You can use them on dry hair by simply adding 1–2 drops into the palms of your hands and running them through your ends for added moisture. You can also use them to tame frizz in the same fashion (a few drops into your palms, which you then run over the problem areas). WEN oils give dry hair extra shine and moisture. If you add a few drops of the oil into your leave-in Cleansing Conditioner, you can also help eliminate frizz that way. If you have a dry scalp, we suggest sleeping with the Tea Tree Oil on your scalp overnight so it works as a treatment. You can also apply oil to your ends so it works as a hydration mask. Apply 4–6 dropperfuls of the Tea Tree Oil directly to your scalp and massage vigorously. Then, apply 4–6 dropperfuls into your palms to apply it to your ends. Sleep with it in (it's not messy, so it won't get on your pillows or sheets) and rinse it out in the morning. WEN oils can also be added to your bathwater to moisturize your skin and create an inviting aromatherapy experience. When applied to your body after showering (prior to towel drying), WEN oils will leave your skin soft, supple, and hydrated. They also make excellent massage oils.

Q: What's the shelf life of WEN?
A:
WEN lasts at least two years and we've found that in some cases, it can last even longer than that.

Q: Which of the products is the leave-in treatment?
A: The Cleansing Conditioner replaces leave-in conditioner. After you cleanse your hair and rinse it very thoroughly, apply 1–3 pumps to the mid-shaft/ends of your hair as a leave-in treatment. Rake and twist your hair with your fingers repeatedly or until it absorbs the product.

Q: Can I use WEN on hair extensions/dreadlocks/perms?
A: Yes, although we generally suggest bringing the product to your hair stylist and speaking with him or her about it first. Plenty of our salon clients have hair extensions and still use our products. However, if your extensions aren't designed to be used with any oil-based products, only use WEN on your ends so you don't loosen the extensions. With dreadlocks, really work the product into your hair while you're cleansing. It'll really help restore hydration to your hair! Since WEN is neither stripping nor damaging, you can use it on perms. However, perms tend to be very drying and damaging, so we suggest that you cleanse as often as possible to help rehydrate your hair.

About WEN by Chaz Dean

WEN by Chaz Dean products have revolutionized the hair industry and the way people around the world think about caring for their hair. While working in his own salon, Chaz witnessed the damage that harsh ingredients in lathering shampoos can cause, including dryness, breakage, and fading color. He realized there must be a better way to cleanse hair without compromising its health and integrity, so he began developing WEN in 1993.

After seven years of research and development, Chaz launched the foundation of his line, WEN Cleansing Conditioners. These non-lathering cleansers replace shampoos, conditioners, deep conditioners, detanglers, and leave-in conditioners without robbing hair of natural essential oils, nutrients, or color.

Chaz has continued to grow the line slowly and steadily in response to his clients' and customers' needs. His collection's six core Cleansing Conditioners establish the foundation for beautiful hair, while complementary styling and treatment products help nourish, style, and protect it.

WEN by Chaz Dean Set of (6) 6oz. Cleansing Conditioner Set 3.8 5 182 182
Great Starter Set I have been using Wen for two years and love it!! I recommend this set for new users. It is a great set to see which formula works best for your hair. Make sure you use the recommended amount. Use the cleanse, rinse, and repeat method. Split the recommended pumps in half and use half for the first cleanse and the other half for the second cleanse. The first cleanse gets out the product and oil from your hair. The second cleanse moisturizes and conditions the hair. Make sure to wet your hair thoroughly, add the cleansing conditioner and massage it into your scalp and hair. Add an extra splash of water to get it frothy and creamy. Rinse really well until all the cleansing conditioner is out of your hair. Do this process for both cleanses. Make sure tou leave the second cleanse on your hair for at least 3-5 minutes. Once you have rinsed the second time, add a half pump to a pump of the cleansing conditioner back into your hair as a leave in conditioner. You should have clean, shiny, bouncy hair. I also recommend the styling creme. All the Wen products are wonderful!!! 06-24-14
mixed review When this product first came out Chaz Dean said this one product replaces a ridiculous tray of ancillary products. Well it turns out he came out with a complete line of ancillary products, without which the cleanser/conditioner is not sufficient to obtain the soft and lustrous mane that his models have. This is a very expensive and High Maintenance product line. I absolutely must use the styling cream if I want my hair to shine and not have dry fly away hair. Granted, I live in a very arid climate with single digit humidity, and skin, hair and lips automatically need more moisture. But this product alone does not work as well as Chaz claims. I always have to add a couple of drops of the oil in between washes. And the styling cream, as I said before, is a necessity. Lastly, half the bottles have pumps that stop working half way through the bottle. Even when they do work, I have to pour the product into a pyrex cup to get to the last third to quarter of the product. The pump just stops pumping when you get toward the bottom, and the product is too expensive to just throw it out. The product is not user friendly. Pumping the product out while in the shower is labor intensive. Getting 7 pumps, or whatever the amount Chaz currently recommends, is slow and slippery and takes practice and entails waste. I purposely watched Chaz demonstrate his 2 brush blow out, and I finally realized that this product is ideal for celebrities who have people to do their hair. His high maintenance protocol is simply not practical for people who go to work in the morning and need to get their hair cleaned, dried and styled in a timely manner. Having said all that, when I do have the time and inclination to use several products, the results are great. There just are Negatives that need to be understood. Sorry to be so long winded. 03-01-14
Not for thin hair! I got this in the 8 piece Beauty Testtube a few shipments ago (I'm on A-D) & have received it in every one of the Wen Kits I've purchsed. I have thin hair. I don't recommend this to anyone with thin hair. It made my hair limp & lifeless. I prefer Lavendar for thin hair. 02-23-14
Extremely Unhappy Do not buy this product. This is the worst product. Made my hair course and took out the natural shine. I followed the instructions as described the more product I used, the worse my hair looked. I don' t even trust this product for my pet. 02-09-14
I use as a conditioner ONLY I've been watching this on TV for so long now, finally broke down and bought the 6 bottle set. I really wanted to love it but I just like it, and as a conditioner only. If I don't use a "lather shampoo" my hair looks so greasy at the top, limp and flat. I have medium/thin wavy hair and it makes me look like i haven't washed my hair in days. Doesn't seem to matter which formula I use. I have the same result from them all. I have been using a regular shampoo and using this sparingly as a conditioner only and i will finish up my set that way. I have 3 teenage daughters who have all tried it and do not use it at all. Another thing, the pump only dispenses about 3/4 of the bottle so the last 1/4, i'm struggling to get it out of the bottle. I have decided to skip the pump on the next bottle I open and use the cap only. Aggravating to fight with it each morning but if not, so much is wasted. And at this price, I'm not wasting a drop. I will use up what I have as a conditioner only and won't be reordering. Sad because I so wanted to be a WEN girl too. 01-21-14
So Disappointed! I've been using WEN from a Christmas TSV - initially, I loved it. After the first few times I used it, my hair was so soft and bouncy...but then after 4 weeks, my hair felt lifeless and heavy. My face began to break out, along with my neck and back. My scalp was constantly itchy and my hair began to fall out. I wanted so much for WEN to work for me that I ignored all the problems initially - and then I started reading some of the reviews here from others with sensitive skin, etc. and realized that the WEN was the culprit. I stopped using it, problems went away. This product isn't for everyone, but it seems like I'm in the minority in my opinion. Sorry Chaz, I really wanted to be a WEN girl! 01-13-14
Fig is the milder smell I've had 7 different fragrances of WEN and all of them have the underlying smell of (I think) eucalyptus. My hair dresser wouldn't try the sample I gave her because it smelled like "cold medicine". : ) My overall opinion is that the Fig is the least like eucalyptus and I don't find the smell of it bad either. I do really like the way that it makes my hair feel but I too find it a bit heavy if used all the time so I use it along with my professional shampoo. Two or three days of WEN and then my other shampoo, followed by the WEN again. Alternating them works for me. 01-13-14
Find Your Formula Here! I ordered this set to try and find out which of the regular cleansing conditioners was most like the Fall Apple Spice. I had received it in a previous order, tried it, was turned off by the scent and posted a poor review, but when I went back to shampoo and conditioner, the difference was so obvious that I came back to QVC and stocked up because I knew it was a seasonal scent (and formula) that I wouldn't be able to keep ordering. Fall Apple Spice now smells like beautiful, shiny, bouncy hair to me. So I got this...put the Sweet Almond Mint aside for travel, don't care for Tea Tree or Fig (pew), would reorder Lavender (bouncy) or Cucumber Aloe (soft). I start Pomegranate tomorrow. I ordered the set of 5 seasonals because it came with the Fall Apple Spice. I'd like to rescind my previous review but it won't let me edit so I came here to say I'm definitely a Wen girl, working on finding the regular formula best for me. 12-08-13
A Believer I love using Wen. My hair has never been softer. I only use about 3 pumps for my entire head. I use regular shampoo when I feel my hair is getting weighed down for a freash start. 11-30-13
Gifts for friends to try I really like Wen. I am torn between using this set for myself or my original plan which was to give one to my mom, sister, sister in law and best friend as little christmas gifts. I know my family wouldn't spend the money to try it..so thought I would help them out. I normally use Pomegranite but thought I would try the lavender. I have to be honest, I found the lavender made my hair almost greasy. So now I am worried I am going to give what I thought were cool gifts and instead my family will hate WEN. I have really thought about which one to give each using the guide to each fragrence. But worried they will have reaction I had to Lavender and wonder why I like this product. I just know I am glad I found out I dont like Lavender. I am not sure I will even use it again. That is how much I disliked it. I think I will stick to giving some as gifts. I am wanting to try the cucumber scent and see if I like this one. So far I think I will stick with Pomegranite. I think if people like the gifts..it will be worth it. I like the fact you can try and find right scent for you own hair. 11-13-13
Didn't Work for me! My hair after using was flat ! I thought , I've watched the program about WEN products for some years. I'll order it and see if I too would be happy with the results. No thank you Wen. This was not a match made in heaven. My hair after using this product felt like I just put some conditioner on it (The kind in a tube) and rub it through my hair. I can't send my shipment back fast enough. For those of you who it works well for congratulations. I'm going back to a shampoo that makes my hair feel clean and full of life. 11-12-13
Great Product I bought this six set and have been trying out all of them. My hair is long, at my mid back, it is thick (my hair dresser says it is like a broom) in a good way. I dye it with a health food product that only has three percent peroxide so it does not lighten your hair and does not burn my scalp. I trim my layers often and my hair dresser says I have no split ends. The reason I am telling you this is because when I first read the instructions on how many pumps I was suppose to use, I thought hmm maybe not! But low and behold I only use a total of six (6) pumps for the two washings and my hair is beautiful. I suggest to everyone if you don't process your hair much and have relatively healthy hair I would suggest starting off with less so your hair won't feel weighed down. I have been using Pureology products and alternate between Lanza, and the cost of those shampoos and mositurers (all 32 ounce purchases) are three times more expensive than one 32 ounce bottle of WEN. The fragances of the six, my favorite is Pomegranite and Fig is my least. 10-09-13
