FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
QVC HONORS WOMEN WORLDWIDE IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
QVC TO COMMEMORATE GLOBAL OCCASION WITH DONATION OF
“14 WOMEN” DVDs TO GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA
West Chester, Pa. (March 3, 2009) – In celebration of International Women’s Day, which on March 8 marks the political, economic and social contributions of women, QVC is once again saluting women entrepreneurs this month with special on-air programming. Additionally, QVC has joined forces with The Creative Coalition and Screen Media Films and will present the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), the nation’s premier leadership organization for girls, with a donation of 25,000 DVD copies (retail value of $500,000) of the documentary “14 Women.”
Throughout the month of March, QVC’s special International Women’s Day programming will showcase products made, designed, invented or from companies owned by women, including items from Joan Rivers, Mally Roncal, Chloe Dao, Kate Somerville and Sara Blakely, as well as feature some personal anecdotes on how these women started their businesses.
“Each day at QVC, we bring products to life, sharing the stories behind them. This International Women’s Day, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on some of our amazing on-air guests, celebrating their personal successes,” said Claire Watts, QVC’s president of U.S. Commerce.
QVC will also commemorate International Women’s Day with a presentation to the GSUSA of 25,000 DVD copies of the documentary “14 Women,” which profiles the 14 female senators who were members of the 109th Congress. The donation is made through QVC’s relationship with The Creative Coalition (the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization of the arts and entertainment community) and Screen Media Films’ “Spotlight Initiative” project, which utilizes the platform of film to promote social welfare issues. Viewing “14 Women” and participating in activities that focus on self-esteem and empowerment will help girls become 21st-century leaders who make the world a better place, a key focus of the Girl Scout organization’s new curriculum.
“This generous donation from QVC comes just as our new research shows that girls have unprecedented interest in civic participation and more awareness that they can overcome the obstacles women face,” said Laurie Westley, GSUSA’s senior vice president for Public Policy, Advocacy and the Research Institute. “‘14 Women’ gives us an inspiring and timely new way to help fulfill the leadership mission that has sustained Girl Scouting for 97 years.”
