When it comes to looking and feeling your best in the clothes you wear, knowing your body type and what best suits it is just as important as knowing your proper size. Determine your individual body shape, and read below for helpful suggestions on what styles are most – and least – flattering for you.


Pear or Triangle-shape Pear or Triangle-shape

Goal:
  • • Bring attention to the shoulders and torso area to balance out the silhouette.

  • • Choose pants, skirts, and dresses that flow over the hip and thigh area.

  • • Choose a fitted top or jacket and a flared garment from the waist down.

  • • Suggested styles: pleated skirts, dropped yokes, longer skirts, narrowed sleeves, deep-scoop necklines, A-line skirts, and sweaters that end at the waist, not the hip.

  • • Avoid: slim-fitting pants and skirts, brightly colored pants, shirts with dropped shoulders, and pants with slash pockets on the seam

Goal:
  • • Draw attention away from the shoulders and torso to balance the silhouette.

  • • Choose single-breasted jackets and straight-lined jackets.

  • • Choose brighter colors in pants and skirts to detract from a broad torso.

  • • Suggested styles: narrow sleeves, and narrow and deep necklines.

  • • Avoid: boat necklines, bustline details or pockets, empire waists, boxy jackets, wide belts, and sweaters with a high neck.

  • • Proportions are even, so accentuate the positives.

  • • Choose simple lines and let the silhouette speak for itself.

  • • Suggested styles: flowing fabrics that drape across the shape, slim jackets and skirts, trumpet skirts, pleated skirts, and wrap dresses.

  • • Avoid: ruffles and overly feminine details, as well as details that bring attention to the bust area.

Oval or H-shaped Oval or H-shaped

Goal:
  • • Create a slim appearance using vertical lines.

  • • Choose straight dresses that stop just above the knee.

  • • Choose darker colors — they're more flattering — but add a splash of bright color with a top, jacket, or scarf above the waist.

  • • Suggested styles: deep V-necklines, asymmetrical cuts, loose-fitting tops made from a heavier fabric that keeps its shape, and dresses with a designer shape.

  • • Avoid: waistlines that are too close-fitting which draw attention to the waist, short jackets that stop at the waist, and too many details that add fullness to the figure.
