Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is WEN?
A: WEN is a revolutionary new concept in cleansing your hair that has Hollywood buzzing. It was developed as an alternative to the way people are used to cleansing their hair. WEN Cleansing Conditioners replace shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, and leave-in conditioner, giving you five products in one bottle.
Q: Will WEN really clean my hair? Won't I need shampoo?
A: WEN uses a combination of natural extracts and botanicals to hydrate and cleanse your hair without the use of harsh detergents or chemicals. The perfect mixture and blend of ingredients leaves your hair looking healthy, moisturized, and cleansed.
Q: What's the difference between shampoo & WEN Cleansing Conditioners?
A: First of all, WEN cleanses your hair without harsh detergents or chemicals, leaving it clean and hydrated without stripping or lathering. Since WEN doesn't contain any sodium laurel/laureth sulfates, it doesn't strip your natural oils or color, so your shade will stay vibrant longer.
Q: How do you use WEN Cleansing Conditioners?
A: If you're using the 16-oz or 6-oz sizes, rinse your hair thoroughly, then apply 12–20 pumps of WEN into your palms and rub them together (we recommend 20–40 pumps for thicker/longer hair). Apply it to your scalp and add a splash of water for a foaming effect. Since WEN has no detergents or sodium lauryl sulfate, it won't lather. Massage it thoroughly into your hair, comb it through, and leave it in for the duration of your shower for maximum cleansing and conditioning. Rinse your hair thoroughly and completely, massaging your scalp and running your fingers through to the ends. Apply 1/2–1 pump (depending on your hair length and texture) to soaking wet hair as a leave-in conditioner. For best results, we suggest that you cleanse, rinse, and repeat using half of the recommended pumps for the first cleanse and the remaining half of the pumps for the second cleanse.
Cleansing Conditioner should be applied in four sections: crown, nape, ends on the right, and ends on the left. For hair above the ears, use a minimum of 12 pumps (three pumps per section). For hair above the shoulders, use a minimum of 16 pumps (four pumps per section). For hair down to the shoulders, use a minimum of 24 pumps (six pumps per section). For hair past the shoulders, use a minimum of 32 pumps (eight pumps per section). For hair to your mid-back, use a minimum of 40 pumps (10 pumps per section). For thicker/coarser hair, increase the number of pumps in order to thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hydrate your ends.
If you're using the 32-oz size, rinse your hair thoroughly, then apply 8–16 pumps of WEN into your palms and rub them together (we recommend 16–24 pumps for thicker/longer hair). Apply it to your scalp and add a splash of water for a foaming effect. Massage it thoroughly into your hair, comb it through, and leave it in for the duration of your shower for maximum cleansing and conditioning. Rinse your hair thoroughly and completely, massaging your scalp and running your fingers through to the ends. Apply 1/4–1/2 pump (depending on your hair length and texture) to soaking wet hair as a leave-in conditioner. For best results, we suggest that you cleanse, rinse, and repeat using half of the recommended pumps for the first cleanse and the remaining half of the pumps for the second cleanse.
Cleansing Conditioner should be applied in four sections: crown, nape, ends on the right, and ends on the left. For hair above the ears, use a minimum of eight pumps (two pumps per section). For hair above the shoulders, use a minimum of 12 pumps (three pumps per section). For hair down to the shoulders, use a minimum of 16 pumps (four pumps per section). For hair past the shoulders, use a minimum of 20 pumps (five pumps per section). For hair to your mid-back, use a minimum of 24 pumps (six pumps per section). For thicker/coarser hair, increase the number of pumps in order to thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hydrate your ends.
Q: How many pumps are in each bottle?
A: The approximate number of pumps depends on the bottle size:
6 oz: 60 pumps
16 oz: 160 pumps
32 oz: 192 pumps (standard WEN), 120 pumps (Six Thirteen)
Q: Why won't my pump unlock/open?
A: The pumps on the Cleansing Conditioners are actually very easy to open. The easiest way to release one you're having trouble with is to set the bottle on a hard surface and, while applying slight downward pressure to the pump head, turn in a counterclockwise direction.
Q: I got the pump unlocked, now why won't any product pump out?
A: New pumps will take several pumps to do what we call "prime." If you've pumped it more than 15 times and no product is coming through, please remove the pump from the bottle to ensure that the dip tube is still attached. If it is, please contact Customer Service for a replacement.
Q: My product is low in the bottle. Why isn't the pump working?
A: This is a common problem for all lotion-type products in pump bottles. The nice thing about WEN is that you can see through our bottles so you know how much you have left. First, gently tap the bottle on a hard surface to remove any possible air pockets that have formed at the base of the dip tube. This should get your pump going again. As the product gets lower in the bottle, the pump may stop working again, which is due to the thickness of the product. The best way to get the remainder out of the bottle is to add some warm water and shake it thoroughly to mix the remaining product. While this will slightly dilute the formula, its cleansing properties won't be diminished. The reason we don't create WEN in a more fluid form is because we'd have to dilute the product from the start.
Q: My hair looks greasy and/or weighed down. I tried using less of the product & it hasn't helped. What's wrong?
A: One of the most common misconceptions about WEN products is that they work like traditional conditioners, meaning the more you use, the greasier your hair will be. This couldn't be further from the truth! In fact, if you aren't using enough of the Cleansing Conditioner, it won't be able to clean your hair. The correct number of pumps varies depending on a number of traits, including length, texture, etc. If you want to be safe, the more WEN you use, the better. You may also obtain better results if you cleanse, rinse, and repeat.
Q: How many times a week should I use WEN? Will it damage my hair if I use it every day?
A: The more you use WEN, the better! You can use it twice every day and it'll simply hydrate and moisturize your hair. In fact, when you first start out with our product, we generally suggest that you use it every day. It'll help rehydrate your hair and it'll appear healthier with each cleansing.
Q: How do I use WEN as an overnight treatment?
A: Start out by cleansing your hair like you normally would. After you're done thoroughly rinsing out the Cleansing Conditioner, reapply with half the number of pumps (or more for added benefits), or apply the WEN Re-Moist Hydrating Mask. Splash your hair with water, massage it vigorously, and comb it through with a wide-tooth comb. Then, either wrap your hair in a towel or wear a shower cap and leave it on for as long as possible, which would ideally be overnight. However, even 15–20 minutes
Q: When should I use the WEN oils?
A: The oils are very multipurpose. You can use them on dry hair by simply adding 1–2 drops into the palms of your hands and running them through your ends for added moisture. You can also use them to tame frizz in the same fashion (a few drops into your palms, which you then run over the problem areas). WEN oils give dry hair extra shine and moisture. If you add a few drops of the oil into your leave-in Cleansing Conditioner, you can also help eliminate frizz that way. If you have a dry scalp, we suggest sleeping with the Tea Tree Oil on your scalp overnight so it works as a treatment. You can also apply oil to your ends so it works as a hydration mask. Apply 4–6 dropperfuls of the Tea Tree Oil directly to your scalp and massage vigorously. Then, apply 4–6 dropperfuls into your palms to apply it to your ends. Sleep with it in (it's not messy, so it won't get on your pillows or sheets) and rinse it out in the morning. WEN oils can also be added to your bathwater to moisturize your skin and create an inviting aromatherapy experience. When applied to your body after showering (prior to towel drying), WEN oils will leave your skin soft, supple, and hydrated. They also make excellent massage oils.
Q: What's the shelf life of WEN?
A: WEN lasts at least two years and we've found that in some cases, it can last even longer than that.
Q: Which of the products is the leave-in treatment?
A: The Cleansing Conditioner replaces leave-in conditioner. After you cleanse your hair and rinse it very thoroughly, apply 1–3 pumps to the mid-shaft/ends of your hair as a leave-in treatment. Rake and twist your hair with your fingers repeatedly or until it absorbs the product.
Q: Can I use WEN on hair extensions/dreadlocks/perms?
A: Yes, although we generally suggest bringing the product to your hair stylist and speaking with him or her about it first. Plenty of our salon clients have hair extensions and still use our products. However, if your extensions aren't designed to be used with any oil-based products, only use WEN on your ends so you don't loosen the extensions. With dreadlocks, really work the product into your hair while you're cleansing. It'll really help restore hydration to your hair! Since WEN is neither stripping nor damaging, you can use it on perms. However, perms tend to be very drying and damaging, so we suggest that you cleanse as often as possible to help rehydrate your hair.

About WEN by Chaz Dean
WEN by Chaz Dean products have revolutionized the hair industry and the way people around the world think about caring for their hair. While working in his own salon, Chaz witnessed the damage that harsh ingredients in lathering shampoos can cause, including dryness, breakage, and fading color. He realized there must be a better way to cleanse hair without compromising its health and integrity, so he began developing WEN in 1993.
After seven years of research and development, Chaz launched the foundation of his line, WEN Cleansing Conditioners. These non-lathering cleansers replace shampoos, conditioners, deep conditioners, detanglers, and leave-in conditioners without robbing hair of natural essential oils, nutrients, or color.
Chaz has continued to grow the line slowly and steadily in response to his clients' and customers' needs. His collection's six core Cleansing Conditioners establish the foundation for beautiful hair, while complementary styling and treatment products help nourish, style, and protect it.
