Suarti was born in a small, rural village in central Bali. Named after the Hindu goddess of art and knowledge, Saraswati, it was only fitting that Suarti took an interest in the arts at a young age. She tried music and painting as well as dance, which she became famous for. At just 16 years old, Suarti was asked to join a dance company that traveled the world. Everywhere she went, people asked her about the traditional costumes and jewelry she wore. She decided to design jewelry inspired by her heritage that combined Balinese craftsmanship with her experiences as a dancer and painter.
Suarti married an American and moved to the United States in the 1970s. She initially sold her jewelry out of a Volkswagen bus that she drove from town to town. After her business grew, she found herself traveling to Bali to oversee production so often that she decided to move back in 1989. Suarti is now one of the few jewelry designers who produces and designs her collection in Bali. She's committed to sustaining the art and culture of her native island and its craftspeople.
Like Suarti, her jewelry always represents bold gestures and female strength. She's attracted to gems and stones that she finds meaningful and inspirational. Because she's constantly traveling and looking for new and unusual gems to bring back to Bali, the materials she works with are sourced from all over the world.
Previously famous for dance, Suarti is now renowned for her sterling silver jewelry. Inspired by her Balinese heritage and experiences in the arts, her collection represents bold gestures and female strength. Each piece is individually created by artisans using time-honored techniques.
