Royal Palace® Rugs: About Rug Shedding
Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, or when rubber-soled shoes—like sneakers—break off small wool fibers. This won't affect the wear of the rug. After receiving your new rug, we recommend that you vigorously vacuum it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, with the brush set at a low setting. Repeat this for 2-3 days; it's okay if you fill more than one vacuum bag or canister's worth. This vigorous vacuuming will not harm the rug and will help minimize shedding. You can then vacuum regularly with the brush at a medium or high setting, alternating with an upholstery attachment. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. You'll find wool fibers in the vacuum bag but, again, this won't affect the wear of your rug.

Royal Palace FAQ

What does it mean when you talk about the "density" or "construction" of the rug, such as 70 line, 80 line, 120 line, 160 line, and 200 line?

This refers to the number of tufts in a linear foot, or 12 inches. It is a measurement of the wool pile's density. The higher the density, the more detail that can be achieved in a design. The higher the density, the more intricate shading that can be achieved. All of this results in a higher degree of design clarity. Also, a higher density rug will wear longer and be more durable.

How do I decide what size rug to buy for a room?

Dining room: We recommend a 7'6" x 10' size or larger rug. This depends on the size of your room and the size of your dining room table, both when it is closed and opened with any added leaves. Ideally, you want all of the chairs around the table to remain on the rug when a person sits in the chair and moves the chair away from the table.

Living room: We recommend a size based on the size of your living room and how you want to decorate it. One way is to purchase a large rug, size 7'6" x 10' and up, which fills the open floor space as much as possible, even with chairs and a sofa or loveseat on top of the rug. Another possibility is to create a small conversation area. Here, you could choose a rug between 5' x 7'6" and 6' x 9' in size. Set the sofa or loveseat and/or chairs off the rug to create a conversation setting.

Family room: The same suggestions apply as with the living room.

Bedroom: Again, this depends on the size of the room, but generally you can use accent-size rugs on either side of the bed and at the foot. If your room is very large, a nice decorating idea is to place the bed over a 5' x 7'6" rug with half of it coming out from underneath the bed into the room.

How do I care for my Royal Palace® rug?

We suggest you use a rug pad underneath if the rug is placed on a hard surface floor. This will prevent the rug from sliding, which can cause accidents. If your rug is placed over plush pile carpeting you will experience "bunching" and "wrinkling", especially if furniture is placed on top of it. To minimize this, we suggest double-sided "tacky" rug-to-rug padding. Rotate your rugs periodically. Over the years, foot traffic and sunlight patterns can cause fading or uneven wear if the rug is not occasionally rotated.

Vacuuming is the best way to remove everyday dirt and dust. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. Please set the brush of your vacuum cleaner to a high position so that it is not brushing the pile too harshly. This will cause premature wear and shedding.

Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, and also when rubber-soled shoes, like sneakers, break off small wool fibers. It will not affect the wear of the rug. After vacuuming you will find wool fibers in the vacuum bag – this is normal. These are stray fibers or fibers that the brush breaks off, and this will not affect the wear of your rug.

What is a hand-hooked rug?

This is a looped-pile type of construction. This means that the yarn is tufted from the front of the rug into a foundation creating a loop for the pile. This is a low pile loop. There are three qualities of hand-hooked rugs based on the density and size of the loop. Gross Point has a large loop, Petit Point has a smaller loop, and Micro Point has a very tiny loop. The smaller the loop, the more detail that can be achieved in the design.

What is a hand-tufted rug?

This is basically the same method of construction as the hand-hooked rug, but with one major difference: the wool is tufted from the back of the rug into a foundation. The loop is set higher and then cut, so it no longer is a loop, but rather a "cut" pile.

What is a hand-knotted rug?

A hand-knotted rug is the most difficult to make because every knot is created and tied by hand. These knots are tied around a warp, which is a series of parallel threads running through the entire length of the rug, and then around a weft, the threads running across the width of the rug inserted between all of the rows of knots. The knot is the term used for a strand of wool yarn that is looped around two adjacent warp threads and cut to form the pile or surface of the rug. This type of rug allows for the most intricate and detailed designs. The fringe on a hand-knotted rug is the visible continuation of the warp threads at both ends of the rug.

How is wool processed from the sheep to the rug?

  1. First, the sheep are "shorn". Then, the fleece is washed to remove any foreign materials.
  2. Next, the wool is sorted by quality. We use only the better section of the sheep's fleece, which gives the rug's wool excellent strength, luster, resilience, softness, and durability.
  3. Then, the wool is carded to align the fibers and combed to remove the short fibers. The result is called worsted yarn.
  4. We then spin the wool into a single strand of yarn of different counts or thickness. The strands are twisted together into different types or grades of ply, such as 4 ply, 5 ply, etc.

WONDERFUL ACCENT I LOOOVE this rug. It is just right in my 1/2 bath. It perks it up and adds another dash of class. Had been looking around a lot. I am really glad I got this one. DO NOT HESITATE. 05-02-12
Beautiful Garden Party Rug I ordered this rug in Sage, and have just returned to reorder it in Blue for a guest bath. It is so very well made, and I love the bird, flower, and insect motifs. I believe this could fit well into many different decors; mine is eclectic, but this could complement and add warmth and whimsy to all but the most modern homes. My biggest challenge was first, choosing the color (they are all lovely), and second, determining where to put the rug when it arrived, only because it seemed a good fit for several rooms. This Sage rug has landed in my entry foyer for now, but I'm not certain its location is permanent. It does bring a real cheer to the entrance ( a great first impression), and everyone who has visited has commented on the beauty of my new addition. The petit point is very tight; when I did the recommended vacuuming, I lost a minimal amount of fibers. I can't imagine that anyone who ordered this rug would return it; it's a gem! 03-07-12
