Royal Palace® Rugs: About Rug Shedding
Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, or when rubber-soled shoes—like sneakers—break off small wool fibers. This won't affect the wear of the rug. After receiving your new rug, we recommend that you vigorously vacuum it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, with the brush set at a low setting. Repeat this for 2-3 days; it's okay if you fill more than one vacuum bag or canister's worth. This vigorous vacuuming will not harm the rug and will help minimize shedding. You can then vacuum regularly with the brush at a medium or high setting, alternating with an upholstery attachment. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. You'll find wool fibers in the vacuum bag but, again, this won't affect the wear of your rug.

Royal Palace FAQ

What does it mean when you talk about the "density" or "construction" of the rug, such as 70 line, 80 line, 120 line, 160 line, and 200 line?

This refers to the number of tufts in a linear foot, or 12 inches. It is a measurement of the wool pile's density. The higher the density, the more detail that can be achieved in a design. The higher the density, the more intricate shading that can be achieved. All of this results in a higher degree of design clarity. Also, a higher density rug will wear longer and be more durable.

How do I decide what size rug to buy for a room?

Dining room: We recommend a 7'6" x 10' size or larger rug. This depends on the size of your room and the size of your dining room table, both when it is closed and opened with any added leaves. Ideally, you want all of the chairs around the table to remain on the rug when a person sits in the chair and moves the chair away from the table.

Living room: We recommend a size based on the size of your living room and how you want to decorate it. One way is to purchase a large rug, size 7'6" x 10' and up, which fills the open floor space as much as possible, even with chairs and a sofa or loveseat on top of the rug. Another possibility is to create a small conversation area. Here, you could choose a rug between 5' x 7'6" and 6' x 9' in size. Set the sofa or loveseat and/or chairs off the rug to create a conversation setting.

Family room: The same suggestions apply as with the living room.

Bedroom: Again, this depends on the size of the room, but generally you can use accent-size rugs on either side of the bed and at the foot. If your room is very large, a nice decorating idea is to place the bed over a 5' x 7'6" rug with half of it coming out from underneath the bed into the room.

How do I care for my Royal Palace® rug?

We suggest you use a rug pad underneath if the rug is placed on a hard surface floor. This will prevent the rug from sliding, which can cause accidents. If your rug is placed over plush pile carpeting you will experience "bunching" and "wrinkling", especially if furniture is placed on top of it. To minimize this, we suggest double-sided "tacky" rug-to-rug padding. Rotate your rugs periodically. Over the years, foot traffic and sunlight patterns can cause fading or uneven wear if the rug is not occasionally rotated.

Vacuuming is the best way to remove everyday dirt and dust. We recommend vacuuming once every two weeks. Please set the brush of your vacuum cleaner to a high position so that it is not brushing the pile too harshly. This will cause premature wear and shedding.

Some shedding is normal for a wool rug. Shedding occurs when static electricity attracts loose wool fibers, and also when rubber-soled shoes, like sneakers, break off small wool fibers. It will not affect the wear of the rug. After vacuuming you will find wool fibers in the vacuum bag – this is normal. These are stray fibers or fibers that the brush breaks off, and this will not affect the wear of your rug.

What is a hand-hooked rug?

This is a looped-pile type of construction. This means that the yarn is tufted from the front of the rug into a foundation creating a loop for the pile. This is a low pile loop. There are three qualities of hand-hooked rugs based on the density and size of the loop. Gross Point has a large loop, Petit Point has a smaller loop, and Micro Point has a very tiny loop. The smaller the loop, the more detail that can be achieved in the design.

What is a hand-tufted rug?

This is basically the same method of construction as the hand-hooked rug, but with one major difference: the wool is tufted from the back of the rug into a foundation. The loop is set higher and then cut, so it no longer is a loop, but rather a "cut" pile.

What is a hand-knotted rug?

A hand-knotted rug is the most difficult to make because every knot is created and tied by hand. These knots are tied around a warp, which is a series of parallel threads running through the entire length of the rug, and then around a weft, the threads running across the width of the rug inserted between all of the rows of knots. The knot is the term used for a strand of wool yarn that is looped around two adjacent warp threads and cut to form the pile or surface of the rug. This type of rug allows for the most intricate and detailed designs. The fringe on a hand-knotted rug is the visible continuation of the warp threads at both ends of the rug.

How is wool processed from the sheep to the rug?

  1. First, the sheep are "shorn". Then, the fleece is washed to remove any foreign materials.
  2. Next, the wool is sorted by quality. We use only the better section of the sheep's fleece, which gives the rug's wool excellent strength, luster, resilience, softness, and durability.
  3. Then, the wool is carded to align the fibers and combed to remove the short fibers. The result is called worsted yarn.
  4. We then spin the wool into a single strand of yarn of different counts or thickness. The strands are twisted together into different types or grades of ply, such as 4 ply, 5 ply, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BEAUTIFUL RUGS I PURCHASED 3 OF THESE RUGS--ONE FOR DINING ROOM , ONE FOR THE ENTRANCE AND THE RUNNER. ALL 3 ARE SHEDDING YET(4 MONTHS) AND THE HALL RUG CAME A LITTLE ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES.....STILL I LIKE THE RUGS AND AM WONDERING IF THEY WILL EVER STOP SHEDDING.......I PURCHASED A RUG PROBABLY 20 YEARS PLUS FROM ROYAL PALACE AND IT STILL LOOKED ALMOST AS NICE AS THE DAY I LAID IT DOWN IN DINING ROOM....THINK THE QUALITY WAS A LITTLE NICER IN MY OLD RUG BUT ALL IN ALL AM STILL SATISFIED IN THE RUGS I RECENTLY PURCHASED. THEY DO VACUUM UP NICELY 05-15-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by Rug Envy In-laws I ordered this TSV in the sage 7x9. My in-laws came over for Easter and fell in love with it. They have rug envy! They were impressed with the quality and price. They used to resist the idea of shopping over the TV, said they needed to feel the item first. But since coming to my house and seeing all the items that I have purchased (my daughter is also purchasing form QVC because of me) they are now becoming customers themselves... 03-29-16

Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply Beautiful I purchased the 5x7 soft blue rug. It's simply beautiful. An added feature is how wonderful it feels to walk barefooted across the rug. It matches our blue accent wall and fireplace. There's nothing like it. So plush. So easy to clean. We get a lot of wows from our neighbors. 02-24-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by ROYAL PALACE 5'X7 I PURCHASED THE 5X7 ROYAL PALACE WOOL RUG WHICH HAS SINCE SOLD OUT. SO I AM WRITING THIS UNDER THE 7X9. THE EDGES OF MINE ARE FRAYING ALREADY AND I JUST LAID IT DOWN IN THE CENTER OF MY GREAT ROOM. THE WOOD FLOORING ACCENTUATES THE TAPESTRY OF THE RUG. BUT BECAUSE I DO HAVE A CAT, I AM QUITE CERTAIN THERE WILL BE PULLS ALL OVER THIS AREA RUG IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I BOUGHT IT IN CREAM AND LIKE THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT DARK AND ALIGNS ITSELF WITH MY DECOR. HOWEVER, THE QUALITY OF ROYAL PALACE SEEMS TO HAVE DETERIORATED OVER THE YEARS. I DID HAVE A FEW THAT WERE SMALLER AND HAD FRINGES AT THE EDGES, WHICH WERE CONSTANTLY BEING CAUGHT IN THE VACUUM. GLAD THIS IS FRINGE FREE, BUT FRAYING AFTER ONE DAY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. WHERE'S QUALITY CONTROL WHEN YOU NEED THEM? 02-23-16
Rated 2 out of 5 by Poor Quality, Lumpy I have to start by saying, I purchased a Royal Palace Rug before and loved the thickness and quality of the rug. It is very thick and you don't feel the carvings in the rug pattern. However, the new rug is LUMPY and you can feel that it is like a cheap rug where the wool fibers separate when you walk on it. You can feel every lumpy pattern. The only plus thing about this rug is, it is very colorful. I am soooo dissapointed. I have a beautiful thick one in my dining room, and this new one can't even compare to it. I purchased the 7x9 rug. I am returning it right away. 02-22-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love these wool rugs I have six royal palace rugs in various colors and sizes throughout my home. I love them, some of the rugs are over ten years old and still look like new. These rugs last a very long time, wear well and do not loose the color. I have steam cleaned my living room rug many times and each time it comes out like new, high pile and beautiful colors. When I needed a rug for my home office of course I turned to Royal Palace. I ordered the sage, what a beautiful rug. This will keep my feet warm and cover the floor in the winter months. Thank you for a great product. 02-16-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by Decorative and eye-catching I received my Savonnerie rug several days ago. It looks even better in person. I wanted something to fill in on the side of my living room, which is very large. I had this bare space and wanted something with a lot of design and color going on. Also, since it's a fairly dim room, I wanted something that wouldn't suck any more light out of the room, so I went with the Ivory. This sure makes me look like a decorating pro! It's perfect. I also have a round R-P rug from about seven years ago, which has been in high traffic areas for the whole time, and it looks as good as new. I purchased a Royal Palace 3 x 5 rug back in April or whenever the last show was, and I had been waiting about 10 months for this show. I just hope they come back before so long next time. I will probably be getting something else, probably a runner next time. Please, R-P, don't make us wait another ten months to purchase our next rug from you! Royal Palace are simply the best. And the price for value can't be beat. 02-16-16
