About Rachael Ray

It comes as no surprise that Rachael Ray is a household name in the kitchen. After all, her passion for the culinary craft surfaced at a very early age. “My first vivid memory is watching my mom in a restaurant kitchen. She was flipping something with a spatula. I tried to copy her and ended up grilling my right thumb! I was 3 or 4,” she says. Today, Rachael insists that cooking is a way of life she was simply born into.

Growing up in a family steeped in culinary tradition, Rachael was exposed to a wide range of cooking techniques. The Ray family owned several restaurants in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, before relocating to upstate New York, where her mother worked as the food supervisor for a restaurant chain. Rachael soon moved to New York City to work at Macy’s, first at the candy counter and then as a manager for the Fresh Foods Department, which she credits for her education in gourmet foods. After Macy’s, Rachael helped open Agata & Valentina, the prestigious New York gourmet marketplace where she was the store manager and buyer.

Despite the exciting lifestyle in the foodie circles of New York City, Rachael decided to move back to upstate New York and start managing pubs and restaurants at the famed Sagamore Resort on Lake George. From there, she was recruited by Cowan & Lobel, a large gourmet market in Albany, as their food buyer and, eventually, their “chef.”
As a way to increase grocery sales during the holidays, Rachael created a series of cooking classes, which exploded in popularity. The CBS station in Albany-Schenectady, WRGB-TV, discovered Rachael and signed her on to do a weekly “30-Minute Meals” segment for the evening news. The segment was a major success, with a companion cookbook selling 10,000 copies locally during the holidays. With that, a franchise was born!

Now Rachael enjoys her status as an iconic Food Network television personality, best-selling cookbook author, and editor-in-chief of her own lifestyle magazine. In the fall of 2007, she launched Rachael Ray, her hugely successful syndicated daytime talk show.

Showcasing Rachael’s warmth, energy, and boundless curiosity, the show — produced by CBS Television Distribution and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions — invites viewers to experience life the Rachael Ray way. Credited with getting America back in the kitchen with her easy approach to cooking, Rachael takes the same philosophy with her show — finding simple solutions to everyday problems, both in the kitchen and beyond.

“My life has been a total accident — a very happy, wonderful accident that I didn’t and couldn’t have planned,” says Rachael. Despite her growing celebrity she’s determined to stay grounded and hold on to her down-to-earth values. Rachael still spends as much time as she can at her cabin in the Adirondacks with her husband, John, her family — the “research team” — and her beloved pit bull, Isaboo.

K27017 - Rachael Ray Enamel on Steel 5 qt. Colander withOval Feet 4.5 5 16 16
Cool Colander I purchased "as is" and see no defects thus far. I used it last night for the first time, both washing off a head of cauliflower and draining pasta and it worked great! The oval feet really make a difference which is a huge plus. I'm mad it's not dishwasher safe, but I knew that when I bought it, and handwashing it is no big deal. I only wonder why Rach does not use it on ANY of her shows?! Weird eh? 01-23-11
Top-Notch Quality I purchased this colander in green and absolutely adore it. It is stable, the perfect weight, and large enough to hold a substantial amount of food. The feet add to the stabilization and secure it to the sink. I couldn't be happier and I know with this level of quality it will be a kitchen staple for years to come. 01-01-11
best colander ever I have had my colander for almost a year and absolulty love it. The best that I have ever owned. Put my plastic and stainless steel in the trash. I have no problem with chipping and cracking as others have stated. As soon as I wash it I dry it and it stays shinny and bright. I have the whole set of Rachael Ray cookware in orange and it is the best I have ever owned. I have had the set for a year now and it is as nice as the day it arrived. like any thing if you take care of it properly it will take care or you. Keep up the good work Rach. 11-26-10
Great colander I just used this colander the other day. I love it. It is big enough to drain anything. It is great quality and would recommend buying it. Great job Rachel. 08-24-10
Strained to Perfection! I love this colander. I got it in red to match other kitchen items. I'm sitting it on an island right now as decoration, but will probably use it for straining big pasta amounts later. It will hold fruit, etc. Looks bright and cheery in my kitchen!! 07-06-10
Great kitchen item! I bought the red one it is a very pretty red. I love the weight on this. I feel like a pro when I use it. 05-13-10
Upset My mother bought me this colander for a Christmas gift. It's only been a month and the inside is starting to crack and peel off. I am very upset with it. My Rachel Ray collection is huge and this is the first product that I am very disappointed with. It's such a bummer because I really loved it!! 02-04-10
Big Disappointment I have had this colander since the first week of November & it's already falling apart! I wash & care for it according to directions and store it away by itself. The inside is already peeling & cracking! I'm so disappointed with the product since this happened. I expected more out of products from Rachel Ray. I have a few others from her collection but think this may be my last purchase. 12-24-09
Finally, quality! I bought the red one and it's SO pretty. It's stable (no rocking) and it cleans easily. I used to have a stainless steel colander from the grocery store, but it fell apart in no time. I am so tired of certain "rubber" or plastic ones that are too hard to clean; they're in the garbage. I can tell this one is going to last. I often leave this on the counter, sometimes full of fruit, it's that nice! 11-18-09
NOW THIS IS A COLANDER! What a beauty! HUGE, at least a 2# pasta capacity. Holes are bigger than my old plastic guy...Much more better for fast, complete drainning. Like another reviewer said...feet go over the drain with ease. no more tipping...no more bottom of colander sitting in the just poured out hot water either. Color, orange, is so nice and bright. Well made...I'm going to let the gran-kids play with my old plastic jobber in the sandbox come summer. Thanks, Rach!! 11-11-09
Wonderful This is a great product. I loved the legs so the contents don't sit in the water in the sink. It is a good size too. I am glad I bought the product. I needed a new one. My old one was plastic. This is a beauty!! 11-04-09
