About Rachael Ray

It comes as no surprise that Rachael Ray is a household name in the kitchen. After all, her passion for the culinary craft surfaced at a very early age. “My first vivid memory is watching my mom in a restaurant kitchen. She was flipping something with a spatula. I tried to copy her and ended up grilling my right thumb! I was 3 or 4,” she says. Today, Rachael insists that cooking is a way of life she was simply born into.

Growing up in a family steeped in culinary tradition, Rachael was exposed to a wide range of cooking techniques. The Ray family owned several restaurants in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, before relocating to upstate New York, where her mother worked as the food supervisor for a restaurant chain. Rachael soon moved to New York City to work at Macy’s, first at the candy counter and then as a manager for the Fresh Foods Department, which she credits for her education in gourmet foods. After Macy’s, Rachael helped open Agata & Valentina, the prestigious New York gourmet marketplace where she was the store manager and buyer.

Despite the exciting lifestyle in the foodie circles of New York City, Rachael decided to move back to upstate New York and start managing pubs and restaurants at the famed Sagamore Resort on Lake George. From there, she was recruited by Cowan & Lobel, a large gourmet market in Albany, as their food buyer and, eventually, their “chef.”

As a way to increase grocery sales during the holidays, Rachael created a series of cooking classes, which exploded in popularity. The CBS station in Albany-Schenectady, WRGB-TV, discovered Rachael and signed her on to do a weekly “30-Minute Meals” segment for the evening news. The segment was a major success, with a companion cookbook selling 10,000 copies locally during the holidays. With that, a franchise was born!

Now Rachael enjoys her status as an iconic Food Network television personality, best-selling cookbook author, and editor-in-chief of her own lifestyle magazine. In the fall of 2007, she launched Rachael Ray, her hugely successful syndicated daytime talk show.

Showcasing Rachael’s warmth, energy, and boundless curiosity, the show — produced by CBS Television Distribution and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions — invites viewers to experience life the Rachael Ray way. Credited with getting America back in the kitchen with her easy approach to cooking, Rachael takes the same philosophy with her show — finding simple solutions to everyday problems, both in the kitchen and beyond.

“My life has been a total accident — a very happy, wonderful accident that I didn’t and couldn’t have planned,” says Rachael. Despite her growing celebrity she’s determined to stay grounded and hold on to her down-to-earth values. Rachael still spends as much time as she can at her cabin in the Adirondacks with her husband, John, her family — the “research team” — and her beloved pit bull, Isaboo.

really disappinted the knife worked better than any I've used but still disappointed. I have poor knife skills but I thought this knife might help those develop. As I was inserting the knife into the holder/sharpener a large piece of the plastic casing broke off. Now it is very difficult to insert the knife lining it up properly so it goes through the sharpener and not to the side of it. I'm now hesitant to buy another Rachael Ray product 01-08-14
finally found it I was thrilled when I found this knife on QVC. I had looked all over the internet and even been to Rachel Rays site but could not find it. QVC had it and for a great price. It's exactly what I had hoped for. My sister has one in orange and I loved using it so much while visiting her that I wanted one of my own. Thanks to QVC I have it. 12-30-13
Fabulous! I love this knife. It cuts like butter! No more smashing food trying to cut it. 12-21-13
Best Knife Ever!!!! I love this knife. It is well balanced and sharp. The "rocking" allows you to cut things quickly and accurately. The sharpener inside the sheath works great. The sheath helps keep the knife protected and also keeps you safe from cutting yourself when grabbing from a drawer. I have had mine for a year now and it is still as good as new. I always hand wash & never put in the dishwasher. 12-08-13
Loved by all in household We love ours and it is great for cutting melons. I no longer have to do all the knife sharpening behind my husband as this takes care of it. Would love to buy several for gifts this holiday. Are you considering expanding the color choices to go with your other items in kitchen? BJ Haddock 10-20-13
Best knife I have I thought this knife might be a bit unwieldy when I bought it, but it is so well balanced that it doesn't seem that way. In addition, the sheath has a sharpener in it, so the knife self-sharpens every time it is taken out, or put back. Also, the sheath keeps the knife from being scratched in a drawer, and keeps the user from cutting themselves on the knife. It is so sharp that I look forward to (what used to be boring) chopping jobs now. 08-23-13
So-so Knife That Rusts? I have owned cheap knives and expensive knives. I have never owned a knife that rusted. I was given this as a gift and used it for a week. Hand washed and dried it. Noticed after 2-3 days of use that it had rusted. Wow! Truly disappointed because though it's a heavy knife, it is one that cuts well. I will keep it but I am very saddened at how "cheap" it seems. 05-30-13
Love... I love my new kitchen knife. I've had this on my wish list for a few months...and finally decided to buy it. I love the weight & how it feels on my hand. I always love good kitchen tools for my kitchen. It helps food preps and cooking more fun. I have a lot of kitchen tools from QVC. My daughters have their friends over and some times decide to bake. Their friends always admire the nice kitchen tools we have and wish their mom would buy it too. 05-17-13
Big Knife This is a good knife stays sharp with the sheath. Only complaint is that it is a very heavy knife. 05-14-13
Dull after a 3 months My knife is just Dull after only having it for 3 months I pull it out of the sheath and it still is not sharpen, I got one and my mom got one and we couldn't wait too get it and her's is doing the same thing. I believe am going have too send this back.. My mom said she thinks we got ones that someone else has used and returned and now we have them.. Real bummer because I love everything Rachael makes. so disappointed 05-03-13
So easy to use I am not a very experienced chef. With my old knives I was having a really hard time getting the hang of prep work. It was the hardest part of cooking for me! But with this knife it's so much easier. It is SO easy to use and natural-feeling; it has a great design. Chopping is a lot easier and I don't dread prep anymore! I would definitely recommend this for other beginners or just anyone who wants a knife that's very easy to handle. Love the built-in sharpener too! 04-30-13
I love it It works great. Even my Mom would be proud of my new chopping skills, she also thought I left items to big. It works great on my fresh herbs 03-24-13
