COMMON MISTAKES IN THE WARM-UP FOOTWORK

So often, people worry that they are not performing the Pilates exercises correctly at home when they watch my DVDs or videos. I want to alleviate all concerns regarding this sensitive issue.

Just as most people work out at the gym alone without a personal trainer, I am making it possible for you to work out alone at home. All my instructional DVDs and videos have been developed so you can work along in real time. I emphasize the correct muscles, the correct breathing and the correct set-up without being confusing and intimidating.

As your personal at home trainer, I am, however, aware that there are simple and yet profound subtleties in each exercise that will make an ordinary exercise become deeply extraordinary. In this following article I will attempt to explain those small but remarkable intricacies and will be excited to hear from you here after.

The Warm-up Footwork

The Reason

This series is just as it says—a warm up and therefore is one of the most important sections of your workout. It is designed to warm up the major muscles of your body, especially those in the legs, readying your body for more intense strength and flexibility training.

The warm-up cleverly strengthens the knees so is wonderful for those with weak, dodgy knees. It subtly teaches your core to initiate movement and makes you able to isolate your lower body as move, while keeping your upper body and your core stable and still. If you only have a few minutes in the day do not forget to do your warm-up footwork.

The Goal

The goal in this series of movements is to teach your body how to move correctly, when it is vertical. Because you are lying down the machine is able to simulate a vertical squat BUT without your vertical imbalances. The shoulder pads level your crooked shoulders and the footbar levels your non-symmetrical legs. The platform supports almost your entire weight allowing your neck, shoulders, chest and back to relax. The moving platform forces your core to contract and after a few reps your whole body begins to realize a new, more balanced and better positioned movement. When you stand up and resume your normal vertical position, your body will use the correct muscles, relax the ones it should not be using and realign all your bones so they can once again assume symmetry and balance.

The Mistake

The most important mistake is that you imprint your spine into the platform because the abdominal muscles are weak. In doing so you are reducing the natural curvature of the lumbar spine. This is actually not terrible when you are lying down but since we are trying to teach you how to move when standing, it is important to be able to maintain a neutral spine, with a solid lumbar curve, when lying. That way, when you get up and begin to move around, the spine and the abdominals will know what to do.

The Solution

As you begin to push away from the foot bar and straighten your legs, feel the connection between your shoulder blades and your pelvis (which is touching the platform at the base of your spine). You want to know that there is a little space between your back and the platform, right under your lower back…just enough to slide your hand underneath. More accurately it is the shape of your lower back, midpoint between a pelvic tilt and a pelvic arch. With your back in this position throughout, try to complete the entire warm-up series.

Secondarily, keep heels together and high in the air in the V position, your feet wrapped up and over the bar in the Arches position, toes towards your head in the Heels position, knees over the heels in all positions, knees together using the inner thighs and zip up the space between the legs.

it works I bought may first pilates at loeast 7 years ago,it was wider then and heavier.EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY LOVED IT.IT WAS GREAT ,BUT TO HEAVY,AFTER A FEW YEARS GAVE IT AWAY AND GOT A NEWER ONE. THE OLDER ONE WAS DEFINATLY MADE BETTER.EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SO HEAVY.BUT THIS ONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM UNLESS YOU HAVE AN EXTRA ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE ,IT TAKES UP SPACE EVERYWHERE. YOU CAN'T HIDE IT.AFTER ALL THESE YEARS I FINALLY TOLD MY HUSBAND TO PUT IT AWAY ,I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT AND HAVING IT IN THE WAY.I LOVED IT ,BUT I HAVE NO SPACE ,IF YOU HAVE EXTRA ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE IT IS PERFECT. MY FRIEND I GAVE THE OTHER ONE TO WAS A WASTE .SHE CAN'T STAND TO TAKE IT OUT AND PUT IT AWAY. I HAVE FRIENDS WITH 8 CHILDREN WHO LOVED IT WHEN THEY SEEM IT. THEY HAD ME ORDER IT.THIER KIDS TAKE TURNS WITH IT IN THERE ROOM.I DON'T THINK THE PARENTS EVER GOT TO USE IT,BUT THEY ALSO DIDN'T HAVE ANY PLACE ELSE TO PUT IT IT'S JUST TO BIG AND NOT ALL THAT EASY TO PUT AWZAY.I GAVE IT FOR STARS BECAUSE IT WORKS GREAT ,JUST BE WILLING TO GIVE SOMETHING UPM LIKE DINING ROOM AND YOU'LL LOVE THE RESULTS. 02-20-08
90% happy I have had my Pilates Performer for almost a year now and for the most part I LOVE IT! I love the machine, the dvd's, the lady's calming voice, the price, but mostly,I LOVE THE RESULTS!! It is the best purchase I have made! My only complaint is that I don't think it is long enough. I am only 5' 5" and it really isn't long enough for me. I don't feel I get a really good, long stretch on my legs. (maybe I am doing something wrong, but I don't think so) Other than that, I really do love this machine & what it has done to my overall appearance. 02-08-08
Good but long legs beware I purchased this product after about a year of "debating". I am glad I made the committment to my health and only give it 3 stars for the following reason This machine really isn't made for tall people with long legs. I am 6 feet tall, 5.5 feet of which are legs:) and long arms. I have found however that on alot of the exercises my range of motion is impaired. The full range of motion causes the carraige to hit the top of the machine and stops. I'm not quite sure whether I get the full benefit of the exercise. Even adjusting the ropes on the side dont seem to help. Like I said, it is a great exercise but for tall folks, they may run into a problem with the range of motion. 01-29-08
Good workout. Need extra storage room. I bought this awhile back. It's a well made machine, however, OVC needs to come up a DVD option. I haven't had a VCR in years. You will also need alot of extra space if you want to temporarily store it. It gives me a good workout, but gets in the way when I'm not using it. 01-19-08
don't waste your money I bought this machine more than two years ago. When I received it, it was just before Hurricane Katrina, when I tried to use it it was bulky, kept falling out of place and wouldn't stay level. The one month period of time had already expired and I couldn't return it. It has been taking up space under my bed ever since. A HUGE waste of money. Spend you money on Mari Windsor pilates DVD's instead. They are fabulous. The poor workmanship on this product would make me leave less than one star if I could. 10-27-07
too big This machine is very space consuming. i live in an apartment and had to send it back because there just wasn't enough room to do all the exersices. Also it was too heavy and bulky to move all the time. also the vhs videos were disappointing. i don't even own a vhs player anymore. i guess if you have the space it would be okay for you. oh and a vhs player(lol) 10-09-07
Finally a Workout I've Stuck With Love this machine! I've never been one to stick with a program except for one year that I joined (and used! Go figure!) a local gym. Well, I bought this machine a year ago (Sept. '06) and promptly stuck in under a pile of clothes in my bedroom. I decided to overhaul the way I was eating back in January, and by April I had lost quite a few pounds, but worried that I might be losing muscle at the same time. Out came the Pilates machine and I haven't looked back since. After three kids, my stomach is flat (although, truth be told, I haven't had much of an issue w/that area...it's more my hips and thighs, but things had started changing) and I now have the closest thing to a six-pack that I'll ever have! : ) It took about a month or two to really start seeing major results and getting comments from friends. The way I use it is a bit different from the suggested way...I've broken it down into leg exercises and arm/stomach exercises and attempt to do them every other day. This way I do a much shorter session (20 mins or so)...but still get the benefits. I have to admit, I haven't quite used it every other day...more like 3-4 times a week while I was still losing weight and now that I'm at my goal, about 2 times a week (really should do it more...but life gets in the way!). Something I love about it is that it doesn't get my heart rate up...so I can do it right before bed, if my guilt gets the best of me for almost skipping that day. The downside of that is you do need to add in some kind of cardio...walking a few times a week did it for me. It took me a few tries to be able to fold it quickly and not almost lose a finger! Now I can fold it and unfold it in seconds. The only areas I haven't seen major results in have been my tush, arms and inner/outer thighs. I saw muscles in my arms, but I really wanted to tone them...so I added a few extra exercises that I do with soup cans after my pilates workout. I'm pretty sure that if I took the time to watch the advanced video (didn't come w/DVDs at that time), I'd probably see something that addresses those areas though. The muscles in the tops of my thighs are pretty amazing...it's just the inner and outer part that I need to figure out something for. I feel like I'm a company spokesperson. Three of my friends have purchased one and everyone I know has asked me what my secret is. Too bad they don't have a referral program! ha! Hope this helps. 09-26-07
Fantastic! Absolutely love this exercise machine! If you have the space to leave it set up this piece is a lot of fun to use. 09-24-07
Really works but give it time I bought the machine and the stand more than a year ago but did not use it right away. I wish I had! I've been using the machine regularly for about a month and already see positive changes in my posture, muscle tone and strength. I've been using the beginner's workout and will now watch the video to move on to another level. It does take up some space but this is true of a lot of fitness equipment. I keep it in the bedroom where I am reminded to use it. Give it a try! 09-16-07
Fantastic I am 49 years old and have been using the 4500 JP for 3 years. I love it, love it, love it! I have osteoarthritis in several bones and joints in my body. With the pilates workout, I keep my muscles strong and long. The workout keeps me from having to use medication as prescribed by my physicians. I do far more activities than the docs can believe and we all are aware it is from my pilates workouts. 09-11-07
Brilliant! Converted to Pilates about ten years ago -- something about Marjoleine. Whilst the treadmill continues to "rest", the Performer (my second machine -- had to add the cardio!) works daily. I'm leaner, stronger, and I swear, taller; at the very least, my posture has improved dramatically. The four fears of getting older: cardio, balance, flexibility, and strength are all vastly improved. My tip is this: stick it at the bottom of your bed. That starts the habit. Now it's simply a way of life I'd not want to be without. I *have to add: My bedroom's sort of become the neighbourhood gym. They all land at my house after work. I have candles burning, music on, and a fountain misting the room. Everyone leaves happily, and ultimately, buys their own machines. Adore it! 09-05-07
Love this machine !!! I have an old Pilates Performer purchased from QVC in 2000 and have used it three times a week religiously for the past four years. I am 53 and people tell me I am in great shape. I know that if I take a break for whatever reason, I feel less fit and notice the difference in my posture almost immediately. I have just ordered the rebounder and think that will enhance my workout. Do not hesitate to try it !!!! 08-26-07
