About Paula Deen

About Paula Deen

Who would ever think that a housewife from Albany, Georgia with no formal training in food would become one of the country’s most beloved celebrity cooks? Every day, hordes of fans from all over the country line up outside of Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady & Sons, in Savannah, GA hoping to get a peek of the Food Network’s most approachable chef. This lively Southern woman with piercing blue eyes is proof that dreams can come true. With her best selling cookbooks, entertainment magazine, hit show Paula’s Home Cooking, and the launch of her new show Paula’s Party,it’s easy to see that there is no stopping this woman’s success.

Living with agoraphobia for 20 years and experiencing a crumbling marriage, Deen was left with two growing sons and no source of income. With no education and very little to fall back on, the then-42-year-old housewife reached deep into her Southern roots and drew inspiration from what she knew best – her kitchen stove. Her culinary career began in June of 1989 out of her kitchen with The Bag Lady, a home-based lunch delivery service in Savannah. The woman with the big dreams would whip up tuna fish sandwiches wrapped in Saran Wrap and have her two sons sell them to local businesses. Within two years, The Bag Lady grew too much for a home-based operation, and she eventually opened her first restaurant on Savannah’s Southside called The Lady. In 1996, after five successful years, Deen was ready for yet another challenge and launched her second restaurant The Lady & Sons, which to this day serves thousands of Savannah visitors, including celebrity clientele.

In 1997, Deen published her first cookbook, The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook. As luck would have it, a major publishing house picked it up when one of their literary agents walked into the restaurant to escape a rainstorm. She picked up the cookbook and immediately realized its potential. Shortly after that, Deen’s cookbook career was off to an impressive start with promotional appearances on QVC, where it quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks. By then, Deen’s career seemed to have no limits. In the years that followed, she published numerous other cookbooks, including The Lady & Sons Too!, The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, Paula Deen & Friends Living It Up Southern Style, and Paula Deen Classics. On October 24, Simon & Schuster will release Deen’s sixth cookbook, Paula Deen Celebrates.

Paula’s Home Cooking premiered on the Food Network on November 16, 2002. The program features Deen doing what she does best – being herself, teaching people how to bring joy into their kitchens and homes. With Deen, it’s about teaching viewers to bring out the best in their families and creating happy memories no matter what the budget.

This fall, Deen is launching her second program on the Food Network and taking it to a new level by inviting guests to participate in her cooking classes. Paula’s Party premieres in late October and features the silver-tressed wonder being playful and interacting with her audience. Needless to say, with Paula’s Party, viewers will have an inside view into what makes Deen so special – a clever wit, hearty laugh, and shear genius at making people feel good.

Deen appears regularly on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The View,” and other leading programs. She recently had an opportunity to have a major acting role in Cameron Crowe’s film Elizabethtown starring Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, and Susan Sarandon.

HOME RUN FOR AUNTIE I gave this to my three nieces (5, 7, 10) for Christmas & they jumped for joy when they saw & opened the book. The colors & pictures are fun & easy to understand - especially for the little ones not quite old enough to read yet. It's the perfect guide for adults to encourage kids to get into the kitchen with the adults and have fun. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! 02-28-09
Missing Quality Control This is an EXCELLENT cookbook for young cooks. However, four pages were missing - including the ones for the Rootbeer Float which is my granddaughter's favorite. Imagine the disappointment when we turned to that section and those pages were missing!! I couldn't very well take it back, since the rest of the book will be very super, but from now on I'll open the packaging and check before gifting! 12-26-08
Nice Book to add to my Collection! There arn't any young folks in my home, but it is a fun book to read and add to the cookbook bookshelf! I even, found some easier ways that I could use, in cooking some of my favorite dishes! 12-06-08
Adorable! I got this book for my goddaughter and we have already had so much fun going through it and picking what we want to make. I love that we're making memories and she is learning about things too. It really is a special gift for the little ones. 12-01-08
Glad I got it I bought this for my 6 yr old grandson and he was so excited to get it. It is a really cute cookbook with good recipes. 11-06-08
Great Cookbook This is a great basic cookbook for teaching children to cook. 11-01-08
Maybe Older I found this book difficult for younger children. Can a 5 year old really fry an egg?? Or make a quiche? I was doubtful and returned the book. Maybe for an older child. 10-23-08
Great Book I ordered this book and I thought it looked really good. I was right. When my 8 year old son got home and looked at it, he could not shut up about it. He is so excited about it, he wanted to cook a special meal for a family party. Way to go Paula. 10-20-08
Perfect for children and adults I gave this to my grandsons yesterday for their 8th birthday. One couldn't put it down he was so interested in it and the recipes. It doesn't talk down to children so therefore it works for adults too. I especially want to try the recipe for Monkey bread but Sydney was interested in them all. Thanks Paula and QVC. 10-20-08
THIS BOOK IS AS SWEET AS PAULA HERSELF! I bought this book to use when the grandchildren are staying over. However, I just could not wait to start cooking these simple but delicious recipes. What a wonderful way for parents and grandparents to teach children manners, as well as safe cooking skills. Paula has written her natural tidbits of humor throughout. Only Paula could have written a first cookbook that both adults and children will enjoy for generations. I will be ordering extras for Christmas gifts. 10-18-08
So Adorable!! LOVE this book and I just got it today! I am so happy Paula came out with a cookbook for kids. Having the pictures of the ingredients along with the words really is a great idea and helpful for my beginner readers. I have 3 children 8,7 and 6 and they will be so excited to cook with me now! Thanks QVC for bringing this to us and thanks Paula for writing this! Bring us more!! 10-14-08
Great for kids and adults! This cookbook is so fun! The pictures are adorable and I love how it walks the kids through the recipe step by step, starting with pictures of everything you will need to make the food. I plan to keep this for myself and I will be using it to cook things for my nephews. The recipes are very creative and I'm sure the kids will just love them. Thanks Paula! 10-11-08
