About Paula Deen

About Paula Deen

Who would ever think that a housewife from Albany, Georgia with no formal training in food would become one of the country’s most beloved celebrity cooks? Every day, hordes of fans from all over the country line up outside of Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady & Sons, in Savannah, GA hoping to get a peek of the Food Network’s most approachable chef. This lively Southern woman with piercing blue eyes is proof that dreams can come true. With her best selling cookbooks, entertainment magazine, hit show Paula’s Home Cooking, and the launch of her new show Paula’s Party,it’s easy to see that there is no stopping this woman’s success.

Living with agoraphobia for 20 years and experiencing a crumbling marriage, Deen was left with two growing sons and no source of income. With no education and very little to fall back on, the then-42-year-old housewife reached deep into her Southern roots and drew inspiration from what she knew best – her kitchen stove. Her culinary career began in June of 1989 out of her kitchen with The Bag Lady, a home-based lunch delivery service in Savannah. The woman with the big dreams would whip up tuna fish sandwiches wrapped in Saran Wrap and have her two sons sell them to local businesses. Within two years, The Bag Lady grew too much for a home-based operation, and she eventually opened her first restaurant on Savannah’s Southside called The Lady. In 1996, after five successful years, Deen was ready for yet another challenge and launched her second restaurant The Lady & Sons, which to this day serves thousands of Savannah visitors, including celebrity clientele.

In 1997, Deen published her first cookbook, The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook. As luck would have it, a major publishing house picked it up when one of their literary agents walked into the restaurant to escape a rainstorm. She picked up the cookbook and immediately realized its potential. Shortly after that, Deen’s cookbook career was off to an impressive start with promotional appearances on QVC, where it quickly became one of the best-selling cookbooks. By then, Deen’s career seemed to have no limits. In the years that followed, she published numerous other cookbooks, including The Lady & Sons Too!, The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, Paula Deen & Friends Living It Up Southern Style, and Paula Deen Classics. On October 24, Simon & Schuster will release Deen’s sixth cookbook, Paula Deen Celebrates.

Paula’s Home Cooking premiered on the Food Network on November 16, 2002. The program features Deen doing what she does best – being herself, teaching people how to bring joy into their kitchens and homes. With Deen, it’s about teaching viewers to bring out the best in their families and creating happy memories no matter what the budget.

This fall, Deen is launching her second program on the Food Network and taking it to a new level by inviting guests to participate in her cooking classes. Paula’s Party premieres in late October and features the silver-tressed wonder being playful and interacting with her audience. Needless to say, with Paula’s Party, viewers will have an inside view into what makes Deen so special – a clever wit, hearty laugh, and shear genius at making people feel good.

Deen appears regularly on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The View,” and other leading programs. She recently had an opportunity to have a major acting role in Cameron Crowe’s film Elizabethtown starring Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, and Susan Sarandon.

K17192 - Paula Deen Hammered Cast Iron 12" Everyday Pan w/Pour Spouts 4.5 5 23 23
Best skillet I've ever had!!!!!!!!!!! My husband got this for me for Christmas and I love it!! This is a very heavy cast iron skillet, but that is ok. It cooks the perfect fried chicken every time!! Nothing sticks to this skillet either and it is extremely easy to clean. I will 100% be buying more items from Paula Deen in the future. I would highly recommend this skillet to anyone!!! 06-11-09
Poor Quality I had exactly the same experience as a previous reviewer. My pan also had irregular texture and finishing on the inside (as the other review said), it looked like it had been mechanically smoothed to try and even out the bottom, but was unsuccessful. The center of the bottom looks/feels much different that than the edges as though it was purposely worn-down, but there is still a high spot. I plan on keeping this item due to the expense with returning and also hoping to use an a outdoor camping pan, since I don't use good cookware there. I purchased this pan, and although it was touted as "pre-seaoned" food stick to the center the first, second... fifth tiime I used it! I made sure that I cooked high fat foods in it for the first few times, but the center portion always stuck even when frying bacon! I agree that this item certainly looks and performs like a "blemished/second" quality item, however, I know QVC does not knowingly sell that catagory of product. The Quality Control at the manufacturer's factory needs to be more closely monitored as reading the reviews I think more than a few customers had the same experience. 05-16-09

Where has this pan been?? I am a recent senior citizen (age), I had used my hand me down cast iron skillets for all my adult life. Then, I got carpal tunnel in both wrists, twice. Couldn't lift my skillets with one hand anymore and the handles were to short to use two hands on. Then a week or so ago I saw this Paula Dean Everyday pan with not one but two handles. Yea!!! It arrived and the first thing I made was old fashioned beef stew. It was great. I pulled a lid from one of my old stock pots and it fit perfectly. I would like to see this in smaller sizes as it is very heavy, but at least now I can use both hands to lift it. You Go Paula Dean!!! 12-12-08
Disappointed with quality Ordered this item for a gift and coult not use it because the interior of the pan was extremely irregular with some spots obviously a different level and texture than most of the pan. This could only be considered a "second" quality. It was apparently mechanically smoothed after some high spots were left from manufacturer. Cost me 13.22 to return this heavy item but had no choice. This is the first quality issue I've had with QVC and certainly expected better of Paula Deen merchandise. 12-10-08
What a Pan! This pan is big! In fact, although the specs are on the page and they are correct, it is still larger than I thought it would be. I almost sent it back because of that, but I decided it would cost too much, so I kept it, and I love it! Tonight I made paella in it; the recipe made 10 servings, and this pan was the perfect size. And because it is so nice looking, it went straight to the table for serving. One great thing is how tall the sides are - it's much better than a regular skillet for stir frying, etc, when things seem to jump out onto the range. Another great thing: nothing sticks and it cleans up so easily. There are two cons: 1) as another reviewer mentioned, it is heavy. I think a small person would have trouble with it; 2) no lid - I needed one tonight and ended up using foil because none of my other lids are big enough. I would recommend this to someone who cooks (even occasionally) for more than just a couple of people. 11-20-08
Best Pan Ever! I absolutely LOVE this pan. It my main pan now and never leaves my stove top. I use it for absolutely everything. When I got it, I seasoned it more. Rub Crisco shortening all over it inside and out and bake at 400 for 2 hrs. Turn off oven and let it cool in the oven. Then the first few things I cooked were greasy... bacon, burgers, etc. Absolutely non-stick and great flavor! With cast iron, you do not want to use soap or scrub it. Just wipe it out and it is good to go. 11-16-08
OLD TIME FLAVOR I have just had this for 3 days and already used it 5 times....LOVE this pan..had fried potatoes , steak ,sauted fresh veggies for a quick veg soup..seared my roast , added my veggies for pot roast and stuck it in the oven...it makes food taste like moms home cooking years ago......I'am also going to take it camping.. 11-15-08
GREAT PAN!!!!! I SEASONED THIS PAN WITH BACON FIRST.I KEEP OLIVE OIL BRUSHED AT ALL TIMES WHEN NOT IN USE. IT IS SO PRETTY KEEP IT ON THE STOVE. I HAVE A RED LID THAT FITS IT PERFECTLY(BOUGHT ON QVC) ALSO. SO THATS NOT A PROBLEM.WIPE IT OUT AFTER EACH USE NO PROB.WIPES CLEAN.COOKS GREAT!!!!. FRIED CHICKEN CAME OUT WONDERFUL.THE ONLY THING MY EGGS DIDN'T DO TOO WELL FAULT OF THE COOK NOT THE PAN. LOVE IT. GOOD SIZE AND PRICE. MOSTLY USE ANOTHER COOKWARE BUT ALWAYS KEEP A COUPLE OF IRON SKILLETS AND THIS PAN ON HAND.PART OF A COOKS WARDROBE!!! THANKS PAULA!!! 11-10-08
