About Pillows

Care and Storage

  • Use a Cover

Pillows should be covered with a pillow protector in addition to a decorative pillowcase. These protectors, often with a zipper closure, provide you an additional layer between the pillow and pillowcase.

  • Wash Your Pillow on the Gentle Cycle and Dry Completely

Wash with a mild detergent on a gentle setting. After the wash cycle is finished, rinse the pillow two more times to rid the pillow of any leftover soap. Then spin the pillow two additional times (to rid the pillow of excess water). Dry it completely on a low heat or air setting. Between cycles, remove the pillow and hand fluff. Note that pillows may still be damp inside even when they feel dry to the touch. Any lumps/clumps of fill indicate dampness — dry until you're sure it's completely dry!

  • Fluff Your Pillows Regularly

Fluffing restores fibers to their original puffy shape and allows the inside of the pillow to absorb some fresh air. The longer fibers, either natural or synthetic, remain flattened or compressed, the sooner they'll lose their resilience.

  • Store Your Comforter in a Breathable Bag

When pillows aren't in use, store them in a breathable bag. Storing pillows in a plastic bag will trap moisture, causing the pillow to mildew or the fill to decompose.

Pillow FAQs

What is fill power?
Fill power refers to the quality of the down in our down pillows. The higher the fill power, the better the quality, as it'll loft and insulate better, stay fluffier, and last longer. Higher fill powers can trap more air and, thus, look fluffier. A high fill power in your down pillow will create a fluffy pillow that offers support and comfort with adjustability.

What is a construction pillow?
Many Northern Nights pillows come with an internal construction. Construction pillows offer a superior pillow design. An inner chamber filled with feather provides firm support that resists going flat, while an outer chamber filled with down offers comfort and adjustability. Construction pillows provide both of these benefits in one pillow. A gusset pillow is ideal for side or back sleepers, as fill can spread evenly under the neck for a more natural sleeping position.

What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads contained in one-square inch of fabric. Higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns. They're softer and more luxurious and breathable. The lightest of high-thread-count bedding also maximizes the fill's ability to loft in your pillow.

What is a gusset and why is it important?
Gussets provide a greater "sweet spot" for the head and neck by allowing the fill to spread evenly. They can offer better support to the back or side sleeper who prefers a firmer pillow. Fill can move into the edges of the pillow for even support regardless of where the head lies on the pillow.

What are the healthiest sleeping positions?
To give your body the proper rest it needs and ensure the health of your cervical spine (neck), medical experts recommend two sleeping positions: on your side, with the spine straight; or on your back, maintaining the primary curvature of the cervical spine. Both of these positions prevent "subluxation", or mis-alignment of the neck. Proper alignment can help reduce a number of neck aches, back aches, pinched nerves, and general health problems.

How do I test my pillow to see if it's broken?
Examine the pillow tick (fabric). Is it stained or disintegrating? Is the fill leaking? Here's how to tell:

  1. Lay the fluffed pillow on a flat, hard surface.
  2. Fold the pillow in half (a King-size pillow in thirds) and squeeze out the air.
  3. Release the pillow.
A pillow with support will unfold and return to its original shape. A broken pillow will remain folded.

Why does my new pillow have an odor?
It's quite common for a new natural-fill product to contain an unwanted odor, particularly when it has been stored in or shipped to/from a humid climate. There are many ways to remedy this odor. Try allowing the item to air out for several hours (if you live in a dry climate) and tumbling it in a clothes dryer for several hours on a low or no-heat setting. For an extra fresh scent, place a dryer sheet or tennis ball with a fragrance sprayed on it in the dryer.

Do My Pillows Have Adjustability?
To find out, push the opposing ends of the pillow into the center. If it retains its new shape, your pillow will adjust to your personal comfort, indicating that it has adjustability.

Construction Terms

When it comes to getting the most out of your bedding, understanding construction is key. Reference the helpful guide below for important terminology.

Pillow Gusseting Gusseting: This construction technique creates outer side walls to secure a comforter's top and bottom layers together. It helps a comforter appear loftier and fuller.

Traditional Traditional: The most common construction, this design features a gradual slope around all four sides of the pillow.

Not Good for Some Sleepers These pillows are only good for some down pillow aficionados. Like one of the other reviewers, these pillows will not yield to my head shape and they are not for me. They are perfect for someone who wants to stuff the lumbar region of their back while sitting up in a recliner or a chair. The cover seems to be lined inside to prevent the down from poking through and this gives the pillow a somewhat crunchy response and I think, contributes to the pillow's lack of shapeability for your head and neck, but helps with it's conformity to the lumbar region. The pillow is hypercleaned but has an odor which quickly dissipates within a day. The crunchiness is NOT from feathers. Even though the pillow tag notes that it is at least 75% down, it is actually all down. Absolutely no feather tips can be felt, nor do feathers contribute to their crunchiness, rather it is the interior lining causing the crunchiness. 09-10-13
Not like my old Northern Night Down Pillows These are only 75% down and I find them to be "crunchy" and hard. I was hoping to replace my ALL DOWN pillows from the past but these are not it. I think that they should reveal that these are NOT ALL DOWN. I normally am very happy with my northern night purchases but not these.....packed up to go back. 06-19-13
Wow I love this pillow! I can only sleep with feather or down pillows due to a disc problem in my neck. Had surgery to replace a disc and one is bulging so I have to have a comfortable pillow that will conform to my neck for support. This pillow is just what the doctor ordered! 06-18-13
