Care and Use
What is fill power?
Fill power refers to the quality of the down in our down-topped featherbeds. The higher the fill power, the better the quality, as it’ll loft better, stay fluffier, last longer, and insulate better. Our featherbeds are generously filled with high-quality feather, Eurofeather, Eurodown, or a combination of feather and down.
Why are there different constructions?
Featherbeds come in a variety of constructions. Closed constructions, such as a Baffle Box, prevent fill shifting and require less fluffing and maintenance. Open constructions, such as a Baffle Channel or Framed Cross Tack, need more regular fluffing and maintenance. They stay fluffier and last longer over time because feather can travel throughout the featherbed. Most featherbeds have baffles sewn into the seams, allowing air to flow freely, creating a fluffier featherbed.
What is thread count?
Thread count is the number of threads contained in one-square inch of fabric. Higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns. They’re softer and more luxurious and breathable. Featherbeds require a more durable and tighter weave than other filled products so the feather doesn't leak or travel through the fabric. Featherbeds feature a very tight weave instead of a high thread count. This makes the fabric leak-proof and more durable than other bedding products.
How do I make my bed with a featherbed?
There are many ways to do this. Choose from three easy ways to use your featherbed:
All of our down and feather is Hyperclean® a special washing process that uses biodegradable soaps, washing up to eight times, to remove all of the dirt, dust, and allergens from the down/feather. Northern Nights is the only company that uses Hyperclean down and feather. Very few people are actually allergic to down/feather, but many are allergic to dust and dirt. Hyperclean makes our goods virtually allergy-free.
When it comes to getting the most out of your bedding, understanding construction is key. Reference the helpful guide below for important terminology.
Baffling: This construction type uses sewn-in cloth "walls" to keep the fill in your bedding in place.
Sewn-through Boxes: Constructed by sewing horizontal and vertical stitches into a comforter’s top and bottom layers, these boxes keep fill from clumping.
Channels: Created by sewing the top and bottom layers of the comforter together, channels use horizontal or vertical columns to keep fill in place.
Gusseting: This construction technique creates outer side walls to secure a comforter's top and bottom layers together. It helps a comforter appear loftier and fuller.
Diamond Stitch: This stitching pattern locks fill in place for a low-maintenance design that provides a polished look for the bed.
