I'm so pleased with this purchase. The garages are cardboard, similar to other stacking boxes I've purchased. The cars are painted wood with moveable (plastic) wheels. The back of the boxes have pictures of the matching car in the same quantity as the number on the car. So the #4 box has four cars pictured on back. Looking at the graphics I was concerned that the smallest box and car would be 'too' small....not so. The car (#7) is 1 1/2 inches high with a 2 3/4 inch square garage/box. A cute chubby size for the smallest. My grandson opened it today and is already discovering various ways in which to enjoy this fun set. He was more interested in lining up the cars at first. Then he lined up the boxes (by size) and placed the cars on top. He mixed the cars with the boxes (on purpose I found out when I moved one of them to the actual corresponding box-oops). The garages haven't made it into a stack yet but that's fine with me. I see so many 'FUN' learning opportunities with the colors, numbers, graduated sizes, etc.... A good value for the price.

I am a speech pathologist and use this set when discussing/working on prepositions. We can build a city ir a tower then ask the child to place certain cars on/in/next to/under/between etc certain houses. In addition, you can use it as an ice breaker because kids love cars and these are durable and the colors are eye catching and fun! Bonus- if you line the boxes up by size then drive the cars over the tops of all the boxes, it plays sort of a musical scale which my clients with autism particularly enjoy.

I love Melissa and Doug products. They are very educational and fun. My only complaint about this product is that the garages, I believe, are made of cardboard. I haven't taken it out of the package yet because it is a gift for my son's birthday but it looks like cardboard. The only thing stated in the description is wooden, speaking of the cars. Maybe I just assumed the garages were wooden as well, so upon receiving the toy that was a little dissapointing. Hopefully they stand up to the play from a 2 year old, that's my only concern.
