About James Dyson

James Dyson

James attended London’s Byam Shaw art school but painting beautiful objects wasn’t enough. James wanted to make, and the Royal College of Art allowed just that. James studied architecture, but instead of colonnades and cladding, robust marine engineering was the order of the day. He developed a flat-hulled high-speed landing craft and, with it, his passion for engineering. Pretty soon, he’d also developed a new kind of wheelbarrow – one with a big fat ball that didn’t sink into mud and chunky feet for stability. All the while learning to take risks, make mistakes and use frustration as a fuel for creativity and solving problems. Problems like vacuum cleaners that lose suction. Could the cyclone technology he’d first spotted on a sawmill work in a vacuum cleaner? He ripped the dusty clogged bag from his old vacuum and replaced it with a crude prototypes. 5,126 prototypes later: Dual Cyclone™ technology and the first bagless vacuum cleaner. During the five years it took to develop his first vacuum, James was also battling. First to convince other manufacturers to embrace his new technology. Then to protect his invention when they copied it. It’s enough to give you a complex. And it did. James’ experience informs the way Dyson works today. Keeping our inventions secret. Protecting our ideas. Always taking risks. Like developing a washing machine with 2-drums; emission-filtering diesel exhausts; clean air hand dryers; balls instead of wheels; robots – even a new type of school to get young people into engineering. Always new and better.

H181680 - Dyson DC31AN Handheld Vacuum 4.8 5 4 4
Great, but I've yet to come across a Dyson product that didn't live up to the suction power hype. The handheld is a great idea for touch ups, but at the end of the day, you could spend about 10% more and get the "full size" cordless version which can be used as a handheld or extended to a floor sweeper size. Dysons are great, but get the most you can for you money and buy the next size up 06-12-11
REALLY POWERFUL This thing is so strong. The power of this thing is way more then expected. 06-11-11
SMALL BUT POWERFUL I've seen Dyson on TV for several years. Didn't think there would be much difference in hand held vacs, but I was wrong. This tiny machine is wonderful; picks up everything, the extra attachments enable me to vacuum my rug; and since the Oreck and Electrolux are out for repair, I've used this little number to sweep my apartment. I was so surprised to see how much it picks up. I've gone through 4 "quick pickup" sweepers and a couple of them were pricey. This product is great. I'm very happy with the results it brings. Sure does a great job on the car interior as well. 06-01-11
Love This Like my full size Dyson, this one has excellent pickup, especially for a handheld. Great for removing pet hair from the chairs, dirt from the doorways and around the fireplace, and it even removed lint/thread/batting scraps from a predominantly black quilt I just finished. Next I'll try it to remove lint on my dark colored clothing. You have to recharge it after 5 or 10 minutes, but I'm sure it lasts longer than the other handheld I have, and picks up far better. Well worth the money. As far as buying it for a gift...it's very handy, but who wants to get a vacuum cleaner for a gift. Kind of like getting a mop! 11-15-10
