I used this slicer for the 1st time to slice down a 8 lbs of cooked chuck roast. As with cutting meats by hand, it's best to allow the meats to cool before slicing so they don't fall apart. After allowing the roast to cool on the counter for 20 minutes, it sliced very easily. I was able to cut both thicker and very thin (lunch meat thickness) slices with precision. The hand guard allowed me to feel safe using the machine, even when the meat got down to the very end. The best part is that this slicer is extremely easy to take apart. Virtually, every part of it comes apart for easy and thorough cleaning. This is a big plus. I've had other slicers that did not come apart and it was impossible to clean them properly. Also... despite this machine being made of metal, it is surprisingly light weight. I have arthritis so this is important to me. I don't think you can go wrong with this slicer. It's hard to imagine a home meat slicer performing and looking any better than this. In order to get better, you'd probably have to buy a $500 + commercial slicer.
