Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone should have this in their camera bag Everyone should have this in their bag. In the "old days" of film, the standard prime was either a 35mm or 50mm, with photographers using one or the other for their slight respective advantages. This 40mm is right in the middle! It is tiny, weighs almost nothing. Even though not a metal "L" lens, this has an solid overall build and feel (perhaps because of its compact size) and has a "as your eye sees" field of view. I've used this on several photo shoots so far in place of my 24-70mmL 2.8 (as a test) and am very pleased with the results. Several times of course I wished for a little wider or closer, but often I could compensate by simply moving closer or farther away. (Not always possible in all situations of course, I understand.) I could see no difference so far with the 24-70, in terms sharpness or focusing speed or target acquisition. The STM (versus USM) focus motor is quick and quiet, and I did not notice any noise (not to say it wasn't there, but it wasn't noticeable.) This lens is extremely inexpensive, and the size and weight are insignificant, and even if you didn't replace a lens in your bag, this would add almost no bulk or weight to it. (You could put it in your shirt pocket!) I was able to handhold at 1/20th with the mirror-up setting on my 5DIII and got crisp, sharp photos using just a street lamp for lighting. Very glad I added this to my lens options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Sleeper of Sleepers ! One of the sharpest lenses I've ever used, a great match for full frame (and all) sensors. I do mostly travel and landscapes. I love the 40mm coverage on full-frame, and the 60mm equivalent on APS-C. I use a cheap rubber screw-on shade, so that if I bump it, the lens won't be damaged. But I've had misfocuses and balkiness, so that I have to shut off the 5D2 and turn it back on. This does not inspire confidence for weddings or street shooting. My old EF 35mm f2 is more trustworthy for those purposes. My suggestion, Canon, re-issue this otherwise great 40mm lens and get it right this time. My EF-S 24mm f2.8 is also new STM technology and does not seem to have these issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is always ready This is a fantastic lens! When at an event I used it to capture vender booths where it proved to be excellent. In good light it was such a pleasure to work with I now keep it attached and always ready.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best "street photography" lens ever? Before mentioning about the 40 mm f/2.8 lens, some background information first; I have a 6D and its kit lens 24-105 mm f/4. It is a very good camera as an entry level full frame and the lens covers quite a satisfactory focal range with its constant f/4 for the entire range. I use my camera for travel, architectural and street photography mostly. Here is a brief about my personal experience; 1. Travel photography: I can say that, this set of body and the lens is quite good for travel photography. The benefit of carrying one lens during travels outweighs the benefits of carrying a number of lenses most of the time. 2. Architectural photography: Although a 20 mm lens is my personal preference for architectural photography, the 24-105 mm lens covers most of my needs in that field. So, no serious complaints there. 3. Street photography: I also use my 6D for street photography. A camera with exceptional low light capability and a general purpose lens is what you need for street photography because you never know what you will experience especially in the streets of Istanbul. Walking with the camera for hours has one major disadvantage though. Weight! Don't get me wrong. The weight of 6D with the 24-105 mm kit lens (almost 1425 grams) is quite acceptable as a full frame set but sometimes you want a much lighter camera if you have to carry it all day. Finally, I decided to check the lightweight alternatives. The final destination was mirrorless cameras. I made some research and narrowed down the choices to a few cameras. I even tested some of them. I saw that the mirrorless cameras I liked was between 600 to 900 grams including their lenses (mostly 35 mm full frame equivalent). So, at the end of the day, I had to spend almost two grand for a mirrorless camera and a lens if I really wanted to save around 500 grams of weight from my backpack. Although, mirrorless cameras were lighter, they were not as light as I expected. They were not cheap either. Further, I had to to sacrifice the full frame sensor quality, some sharpness, all day battery capability and usability of my existing lenses. This did not make sense. While I was thinking about the best solution, I came across the 40 mm pancake lens. Its size and weight was very attractive. I knew that most of my street photography shots were taken around 20 to 50 mm focal lengths. Further, f/2.8 was not bad at all. Further, 6D with a 40 mm lens was almost 885 grams. It was interesting that the weight was within the range of the mirrorless cameras I tested. So, instead of spending a grand or two for a mirrorless camera, this pancake lens seemed a very good alternative. The result? I can say that this 40 mm f/2.8 converted my 6D to a very good camera for street photography. Interestingly sharp photos and the low profile look of this lens (which is sometimes very important for street photography) made it my primary choice for street and even travel photography!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compact lens Was hesitant to buy this because with a 35 and 50 prime already in my bag I didn't think i would use this much. I find it on the end of my camera almost more than any other lens because of how practically weightless it is. Perfect for traveling or when you're going to be walking a lot. Super sharp lens, even in the corners, fast focus and good build.
