As global citizens, we make choices that help sustain the planet that sustains us.
At QVC, "green" isn't just a color option for one of our products. It represents our commitment to taking eco-conscious steps when it comes to designing and operating our facilities, packaging and shipping our goods, and more.
Together, we're working to create a greener Q—and a brighter future for all of us.
That's just one of the ways we're Together for Better.
We've designed and implemented a number of solutions to help operate worksites in a responsible and sustainable manner, including:
Our goal is to reduce, reuse, and recycle at all facilities. We're especially proud of our zero-landfill electronics recycling program. Today, all e-waste generated by our company is handled in an environmentally responsible manner. In 2012, we recycled or repurposed over 95,000 pounds of e-waste.
At QVC, we're looking for packing solutions that protect our products—and the environment. Not only are we using more post-consumer waste recycled products in our boxes, packing materials, and shipping bags, but we also encourage our vendors to use recyclable and degradable packing materials as well.
We're off to a good start; in the United States, we ship about 75% of hard goods directly in the vendor cartons, which means we avoid shipping a "carton in carton" to our customers. We're also transitioning from polystyrene packing peanuts to biodegradable starch peanuts. To further advance our packaging efficiency, our shipping boxes contain post-consumer waste and other recycled materials. Our shipping bags also contain post-consumer waste and are fully recyclable. Additionally, the jewelry cases used to ship QVC generic-branded items were converted from polyurethane and metal cases to recyclable cardboard boxes and fabric pouches.
Moving forward, QVC plans to do even more. We're studying our building systems and processes, looking for ways to reduce our use. We're exploring alternative eco-friendly designs and materials, investing in global video conference systems to reduce our travel, and looking at alternative energy resources. And to extend the long-term reach, we're engaging with our employees, vendors, and the community to find a path toward a greener future here at QVC.
