About Morganite

Stone Information & Mining

Morganite is the pink to orange-pink variety of beryl, a mineral that includes emerald and aquamarine. Like many gems found in pegmatites, morganite can form large crystals. Miners in Brazil have found crystals as large as 22 lbs. (10 kg). The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., includes two faceted gems weighing 236 cts. and 250 cts. in its collection. Although morganite is rarer than aquamarine, large cut stones are readily available on today's market. That's probably because morganite hasn't been promoted to the jewelry-buying public nearly as widely as aquamarine or emerald.

Most of the morganite on the market comes from pegmatite mines in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Afghanistan, Mozambique, Namibia, and the US have been minor and inconsistent sources. While it's only a minor producer today, the original Madagascar deposit still sets the standard for the best material. That location's yield of magenta-colored rough was superior to crystals from other sources.

Legend & Lore

Following the discovery of a new locality for rose beryl in Madagascar in 1910, George Kunz proposed the name morganite at a meeting of the New York Academy of Sciences on 5 December 1910 to honor his friend and customer J.P. Morgan for his financial support for the arts and sciences, and his important gifts of gems to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Morgan was one of the most important gem collectors in the early 1900s — his collection was partly assembled by Tiffany and Company and their chief gemologist, Kunz.

On October 7th, 1989, one of the largest specimens of Morganite was uncovered. It was found in the Bennet Quarry of Buckfield, Maine, and it was somewhat orangish in hue and about 23 cm long and 30 cm across. This well-formed crystal weighed in at just more than 50 pounds, and was called 'The Rose of Maine'.

Morganite's color range includes pink, rose, peach, and salmon. Morganite is known primarily as a pastel-colored gem in light, soft shades of pink, purplish pink, and orangy pink. Although light tones are normal for morganite, some stones display strong color. Strong color in morganite is rare, and gems usually have to be large to achieve the finest color.

Warm, soapy water is always a safe cleaning method for morganite. Cleaning by ultrasonic and steam cleaners is usually safe, unless the stone has liquid inclusions or fractures.

Simply Gorgeous!!!! This ring is absolutely gorgeous. The size of the stones are just right not too small or too big. The stone has a beautiful color and the diamonds just sparkle. I am just so glad I did this purchase. I am a very satisfied customer!!!! 01-13-15
Beautiful Ring This ring sparkles! Beautiful unusual design and color. Makes quite a statement on your finger. Probably a little overpriced if not on sale. 12-06-14
impressive but not quite right The stones in this ring are beautiful, the perfect color of blush pink and faceted to make the stones "sing." BUT the ring is not comfortable (for me) on my finger. The stones go a bit too deep on the shank and irritate the fingers on either side of the finger the ring sits on. Also, the place where the metal and the stones meet, does not feel smooth and that irritates the surrounding fingers as well. As much as I wanted to love this ring completely, for the price I couldn't justify the things about it that did not make it a "perfect fit." 07-24-14
Disappointing... I've been watching this ring for ages, trying to decide whether to invest. I noted that the reviews were mixed but the ring itself looked truly lovely when I saw it on QVC.com, so I decided to take the plunge. The reality has been a huge disappointment! The ring arrived recently and the Morganite stones are almost colorless and totally lackluster! The diamonds are so infinitesimal that they detract from rather than enhance the ring. This ring has no sparkle and certainly not good value. Sadly it will have to be returned and my quest for a beautiful morganite ring goes on. 07-06-14
Pricey for the quality I wanted to keep this ring as I love the color and style! It is rather lightweight and the diamonds are rather inconsequential. I was waffling on whether to return it but when it discolored my finger after wearing it a second day, it was time to send it back! I was willing to keep it as fun costume jewelry but not at this price. 04-08-14
BEAUTIFUL I already have a three morganite rings and the bracelet. This is as beautiful as the others. Color is gorgeous. It's my favorite stone since there isn't much of a variety of jewelry with alexandrites around. There are a couple more rings that I like. Wish they made necklaces that have morganite grouped together in a background of gold covered silver with diamonds to make them look substantial. 03-11-14
Bitter Sweet I have had this on my wish list FOREVER. It is beautiful. 2 Challenges: Size; ordered 7 and bit is big. Jeweler says it measured 7 1/2 and he will not size it down because of metal. Diamonds are sooo inconsequential all you see is setting. That is a retraction from ring. We're it not a gift; I would return it. 01-25-14
Edges are too sharp The edges of the ring are not rounded making the ring uncomfortabele to slip over the knuckle of the hand that I want to wear it on. I am seriously considering returning the ring. 11-29-13
Pretty buy pricey I like this ring but the stones aren't as bright and colorful as I thought they would be----look washed out. It is comfortable and the diamonds are a nice accent. Trying to justify keeping if for the price since the stones aren't as bright as I had hoped. 11-16-13
Beautiful............. This ring is definitely beautiful in its design. The color of the stones in the ring I received are a pink-y peach, or peach-y pink & sparkle nicely because of the faceting. The diamonds are a bit inconsequential. The ring is light-weight. As much as I think this ring is beautiful, I'm having trouble deciding if it's worth the cost. 07-26-13
Sooooo Happy!!! This ring is gorgeous! I too was looking at single stone rings, but I am so glad that I found this one. The Morganite is beautiful, they really sparkle and so do the diamonds..not a lot of diamond presence but just enough to set the Morganite off nicely and they do sparkle also. Just a beautiful piece, you won't be disappointed with this one. 07-22-13
