About Kunzite

Stone Information & Mining

Kunzite is the best-known variety of the mineral spodumene. It's named after famed gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who was the first to identify it as a unique variety of spodumene. It's found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, and the US state of California. Kunzite has two perfect cleavage directions. It's pleochroic, with the best color visible when you look down the length of the crystal. Cutters keep these factors in mind when they orient gemstones for finishing. They might also cut a kunzite deep to emphasize its pink to violet color. It is not unusual to find kunzite in large sizes. The Smithsonian Institution houses a faceted heart-shaped kunzite that weighs 880 carats.

Legend & Lore

Kunzite is a relative newcomer to the array of colored stones available for use in jewelry. As the story goes, specimens of an as-yet-unidentified pink crystal were found in San Diego County, California, and sent to Tiffany & Co.'s mineralogist, George Frederick Kunz. The year was 1902. Kunz was able to confirm that the crystals were, in fact, spodumene, but the previously unrecognized color made the find a new variety of the mineral. Charles Baskerville, a chemistry professor at the University of North Carolina and later the City College of New York, subsequently named kunzite in honor of George Kunz in 1903. In the years since, kunzite has proven to be a highly desirable gemstone. Occurring in attractive shades of pink to violet, kunzite crystals are also often large, with relatively few inclusions. Though difficult to cut due to its two cleavage directions, it lends itself to lovely finished gemstones that show magnificently in fine jewelry.

Kunzite is the pink-to-violet variety of the mineral spodumene, and gets its color from manganese. It's most often found in shades of pale pink, but more vivid colors are possible and it can achieve rare hues of vivid violet to purple.

It's important to avoid steam or ultrasound for cleaning kunzite: Warm, soapy water works best.

J27462 - 2.00 ct Oval Kunzite & 1/10 ct tw Diamond Ring,14K Rose Gold 3.1 5 11 11
Beautiful Stone - But Too Thin The stone was absolutely beautiful especially against the rose gold. Sadly, the ring was too thin. I was afraid it would bend. I realize that the Q might be selling thinner rings due to the price of gold but most people would not mind spending a little more to get a good quality piece. Returned. 11-13-10
No color The center stone showed a faint tint of pink in good light. The whole reason for buying kunzite is the vibrant pink color. The diamonds were dull. I should have believed the reviews. Not for me. 08-10-10
WAY TOO PALE Kunzite is a very pink, pink. If you saw the Jackie Kennedy collection, there was a reproduction of the Kunzite Ring Jack Kennedy was to give his wife on the Christmas after he was shot. Now THERE is a real Kunzite ring! 04-21-10
Big Disappointment! The color of the kunzite is very pale, almost clear. I am returning it for this reason. 02-07-10
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! This is the prettiest ring I have ever seen!!!! It is a beautiful pale pink with a hint of purple. I waited too long and my size was gone so I had to order the next size up. It is so beautiful I am going to pay to have it made smaller. When I received it, I knew immediately that I would be keeping it. I ordered a morganite ring that was almost colorless so I was thrilled to get this ring. My search for a pink ring is over!!!!!! 02-04-10
Nice ring but.... I thought the ring was a beautiful concept, the pink stone with the rose gold band, rose gold being a favorite of mine but, I was afraid to wear it, the band was so thin. I have two morganite rings, one from QVC, and the color of the stones are similar to the Kunzite so I decided to send this one back. I really couldn't see paying the price for such a thin band. 01-29-10
LOVE IT!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE this ring! The pink is so subtle but yet brilliant. It matches perfectly with the rose gold. The band is a little thin but the ring is so delicate that it works. I love pink stones and this is the best ring I have ever purchased and believe me I have purchased many, many rings from QVC. Thanks for the beautiful ring!! 01-09-10
Tickled pink This is it...the perfect pink ring. If you like pink like I do, you must have one. The designer combined Kunzite and rose gold and created a thing of beauty. It is my favorite and I have worn it every day since I received it. 01-22-09
Disappointed I love kunzite and I was so anxious to get this ring. At first look I saw it was so pale and so thin with the gold. I have two other pieces of kunzite and they are as pink as a baby girl's blanket. I also ordered the morganite ring (j35233) to see which I liked better. Unfortunately this ring too is almost colorless. The kunzite ring is going back. Unsure about the other. 01-21-09
A Favorite I knew this ring was for me the moment I opened the box. It is delicate and feminie and very pretty. The pink color is more obvious and noticeable than with morganites. I think it would make a lovely engagement ring for those who don't want a tradtional diamond ring. I have an insane number of rings and this is among my favorites. There are very few choices that were sure keepers from the moment I laid eyes on it but this is one of those. Enjoy! 01-10-09
lovely, delicate The stone is a lovely pale pink. Rose gold is the perfect color for the setting. The downside is that there is minimal gold in the setting. I would gladly have paid for another couple of grams of gold. The band is so thin that I'm not sure I'll keep this. darn. 12-29-08
