About Spinel

The beauty, brilliance, and durability of spinel make it the perfect gemstone to wear every day and in any type of jewelry. Spinel is available in exotic locations throughout the world in a wide array of colors, including pink, red, lavender, purple, blue, and black.

Since spinel is an 8 on the Mohs' scale of hardness, it can be faceted to a brilliant sparkle and is difficult to chip and scratch. Historically, spinel has been often confused with other similarly colored gemstones. The high brilliance and reflective nature that faceted black spinel exhibits makes it easily mistaken for black diamonds. Because spinel can be found in many of the same mining areas that produce sapphire and ruby, it has often been mistaken for these beauties. In fact, several fine historically important "rubies," including the "Black Prince's Ruby" in the British Crown Jewels, is actually red spinel.

About Opal

Stone Information & Mining

Opal is known for its unique display of flashing rainbow colors called play-of-color. There are two broad classes of opal: precious and common. Precious opal displays play-of-color, common opal does not. Opal is the product of seasonal rains that drenched dry ground in regions such as Australia's semi-desert "outback." The showers soaked deep into ancient underground rock, carrying dissolved silica (a compound of silicon and oxygen) downward. During dry periods, much of the water evaporated, leaving solid deposits of silica in the cracks and between the layers of underground sedimentary rock. The silica deposits formed opal. Play-of-color occurs in precious opal because it's made up of sub-microscopic spheres stacked in a grid-like pattern—like layers of Ping-Pong balls in a box. As the lightwaves travel between the spheres, the waves diffract, or bend. As they bend, they break up into the colors of the rainbow, called spectral colors. Play-of-color is the result. When Australia's mines began to produce opals commercially in the 1890s, it quickly became the world's primary source for this October birthstone.

Legend & Lore

Because opal has the colors of other gemstones, the Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. The Bedouins believed that opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms.

Opal hues can range across the spectrum. An opal might display a single color, two or three colors, or all the colors of the rainbow. Opal displays background color in addition to play-of-color. Background color—also called body color—is caused by the suspension of tiny impurities within opal's silica spheres.

The only safe way to clean opal is with warm, soapy water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Love This Ring But Stone Fell Out I am going to the jeweler to have the opal re-set. I get so many compliments on this ring and can't wait to have it repaired. I was very disappointed when the opal fell off after only 5 months of wearing it to the office once or twice a week. Thank God I felt it when the opal was falling out and I was able to catch it and save it. 08-31-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic This is by far the best I have ever purchased from QVC. The opal is wonderful. 08-31-15
Rated 1 out of 5 by Rough Edges The ring I received had rough edges and looked cheap. The opal did have a pretty color though. Sent it back. 05-21-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by unique One of my favorite rings. I thought the black spinal would be too over powering but they are not. The opal is stunning and shines with many colors. So much that my ring was stolen. My mother was sweet enough to order me another. I hope the replacement ring has just the same presence 05-11-15
Rated 1 out of 5 by Opal fell out on first day When this ring arrived, the opal was very loose and then it just fell out while I was still trying it on. I did not know from watching the presentation that there was a slab of silver right under the opal. I would not have purchased if that information was given. Needless to say, had to return. The opal was very pretty though. Think opals would do better if bezel set. Not sure how my ring got past quality control since it arrived defective. 03-29-15
Rated 3 out of 5 by Minor flaws but decent for the price This ring is pretty for the cost but expect flaws. Mine has black brush strokes around the spinel. The opal was pretty but now has a speckled milky appearance to it. 03-18-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by mezmerizing love this ring, can't stop looking at it.,my most favorite piece of jewelry I also got the Ethiopian opal cross although nice it is a disappointment it doesn't have the same watery look or color that the ring has. Hope they come out with a necklace to match the ring 02-20-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by Gorgeous! I've waited a very long time for this ring to become available in a size 7. I received it today and was not disappointed. It is absolutely stunning. The opal has a wonderful fire and the black spinel surrounding the opal, enhances the look of the ring. It has a vintage feel that is charming. It's not too big of a ring, definitely not too small either. It's true to size. I love it! 02-19-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by STUNNING The black spinel compliments the fire in this opal beautifully. My daughter's birthstone is Opal, and the minute I saw this on line, I had to purchase. I could tell by the picture it would be a keeper, and QVC did not disappoint on this one. When I received it, of course, I had to look, and could not believe how unique and GORGEOUS this ring is. I had a hard time giving it away, but my daughter love's it, and she has received many compliments on it. October babies, you won't be disappointed with this beauty. As Always, GREAT JOB to your buyers and designers at QVC. Keep them coming!! 02-13-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love this ring I orderd this ring because I love opal's and this is so much pretty than on TV. TV does not do this ring justice. It has a very large opal in the center of it. Yes I would recommend this to anybody that love jewerly like I do. I also purchase the 16.50 black spinel bracelet to go with this and they both are awsome. I got a size 5 in this and it just fix me. 01-18-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by Even better in person. I just received my ring in the mail yesterday and I couldn't be happier! This ring is such a unique piece. It's feminine and bold. The contrast between the black spinel and opal is absolutely beautiful! To top it off this ring is very comfortable to wear. I am extremely happy with this purchase. If you like unique pieces of jewelry this ring is a must have your collection. 01-17-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by overjoyed... ! Even though this ring had many positive reviews, there were some negative reviews about the lack of color in the opal, so I was prepared to send it back. How delighted I was to see the beautiful rainbow of colors and the wonderful contrast with the sparkly black spinel border! I couldn't ask for more - a bold presence in a ring that is smaller than I would buy normally. And, I have wanted an Ethiopian Opal ring for a long time - I am so pleased that I waited for this one! 01-15-15
